Taking the ext2 file system and passive translators as an example, a passive translator is currently stored in a system specific field in the file system.  This is why we have to set the ``creator os'' field to ``hurd'' when creating an ext2 file system where we want to be able to store passive translators on.

If support for extended attributes were implemented, doing that special handling would no longer be necessary: we could just use a standard extended attribute for storing passive translators.  This would for example also mean that they can easily be accessed and modified from other operating systems through standard measures.

This task is about implementing that as described for the ext2 file system and making up a plan for a painless transition.
