Heh, ok. I'm not sure what is worse, having unclear statement about Savannah, or telling that we missed one of our hosting requirements at registration time. Anyway this is no secret, the tracker archive is public.

All the best.

Well, I think I should not make such a bad promotion to Savannah... I prefer stay unclear.

And, as you say, this issue is raised during the approval...

Ok, I'll remove it. Maybe you'll want to clarify "Savannah doesn't want it anymore though".

Ok, the migration is done now. You can close this project.
Thanks for hosting us during this period.

This issue is normaly raised during the approval, and the registration page points that we would like our users to use "free software" instead of "open source".

Have a look at the bottom of:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/project/admin/?group=ometah
:)

Tell me if you need help to retrieve any other data.

Ok, I understand your point of vue. We will now leave Savannah for another hosting service. I suggest you to put an entry on the FAQ pointing out this problem, so that future project will not lost some time.

By the way, I have'nt find in the documentation a way to get the current complete CVSROOT archive of our project, is it possible ?

I will warn you after we have leaved, I suppose you will then close the project page.

Hi,

The name issue is unfortunately problematic. This put us in a conflicting situation, where we insist on the meaning of "free", and yet host project with "open" in the name.

The name need not use "free" instead, just not "open".

Apologizes again for pointing this late.

The CVS will be updated soon with copyright and licences corrections.

Concerning the open-vs-free issue, I am afraid that we will not change the name of the project. This point have been discussed with  contributors, and we think this is not desirable, for some reasons.

We will put some notices on the website and the about text, so far as possible, precising that oMetah is licenced under the GNU LGPL and not some other « open-source » licence. If there is
preferable way of doing so, please precise it.

If this is not satisfactory, we will close the project as soon as possible, avoiding the creatation of any problem to savannah.

Hi NoJhan,

As we said we are reviewing your source code (with some slight delay).

First, we made a mistake when approving your project, that contains "open" in its name.
Savannah's mission is to host free software projects, and we want the public to think of them as free software projects.  A project name that says "open" will tend to lead people to think of the project as "open source" instead of "free software".

We would like you to accept to use "free" instead of "open" in your project name.

Now on to the code itself. Your license notices are good. However, lots of file, abeilt they mention the author(s), do not have a valid copyright notice. Please add it. You could also change the FSF address in the process (https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=3766).

The documentation should also carry copyright and license notices. We recommand you use the GFDL for this kind of work.
In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GFDL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements after the title page of each work.

In addition, if you haven't already, please add a copy of the FDL (available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html in various formats) as a section of your works , and as plain text in a file named 'COPYING' (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt).

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html#SEC4

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl-howto.html also covers additional points, including a smaller notice that you can use in auxiliary files.

Tell me when you have an updated CVS repository, and please reply asap wrt the open-vs-free issue.

Regards.

Hi Johann,

I have approved your project.  You will receive an automated e-mail
containing detailed information about the approval.

As your project was approved as without source code we will check your
CVS in a month (more or less) looking for any kind of problem.

Regards,

Hi,

I have approved your project for inclusion in Savannah.

We will be reviewing the cvs code in a month to check if the
source files contain appropriate copyright notice and
permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of
source code. Our review would help catch potential legal issues
early.

You should get an automated email with more information shortly.

Hi Johann,

We can approve your project as without source code, in this case we will check your CVS in a month(more or less) checking for any kind of problem, if you are agree with this, let us know.

Please, your next answer write it in the tracker, and not by email.

<answer from Johann to my email>

Hi Jonathan,

The "NMSearch" files have an unknown license (the author give the
autorisation to use them, but is unclear in which way), but they will
not be part of the "Open Metaheuristic" in this form. This part will
be rewrited in the very begining of the project.

I precise that the project is not written at this step, we only have
the design and the willing of finding a place to work (we are
approximatively 5 contributors nowadays).

The project provided in previous links is just a "proof of concept"
and only a minor part of the code (which we can redistribute as free
software) will be used in oMetah.

I must add that I am aware of the needs associated with the use of the
(L)GPL (as a contributor to other free software). Should I prepare a
archive with the very basic structure of the project along with the
licenses files (and COPYING and AUTHORS) ?

We haven't any source code to provide yet, and are waiting for a
website with a nice project manager software to start oMetah.
Should we consider working somewhere else at a first step and come
back later on Savannah ?

Regards,

NoJhan

Hi Johann,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

Can you provide us with more information about the license of the
"NMSearch" files? and if you're going to replace them, this will be
done in a short time or it will be it in a long time?

In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the
GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at
the beginning of every file of source code.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a
copy of the plain text version of the GPL, available from
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn
why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for
example, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

Description:
------------
Our project aim to develop a library for the conception, test and use of metaheuristics.

(Metaheuristics are a class of optimization algorithms. Some classical ones are genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, etc.)

The main goals of the project are :
1° give a set of tools tools for the conception of metaheuristics on the  "adaptive memory programming" principle.
2° allow the algorithms to handle classical real-life problems without modifications of the sourcecode of the algorithms
3° give a set of test tools, for validation

The project will try to use a KISS approach : from the point of vue of a metaheuristic conceptor, it should be as easy as possible to implement and use a new method.

The project will be written in ANSI C++, using an object oriented approach. The first aim is to produce a usable library, with a simple command line interface.

An overview of the source code can be found at :
http://nojhan.free.fr/pro/metah_dreo-al_2004.tar.gz
Note that the university of Paris 12 as give its agreement for the development of a free software. The files named "NMSearch" have a license that is unclear, but they will be rewritten from scratch to fit the new library. Other contributors listed in the sources have given their agreement too.

Note that the project is in itself a major rewrite of the above one.
