Hi,

The notice we recommend at the GNU project is slightly different:
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/maintain.html#License-Notices-for-Other-Files

Nevertheless I approved your project. Welcome on board!

The way it is done now achieves this and seems to be on agreement with Savannah's requirements.

I could not find any other issues and am going to suggest this project for approval. I hope the project's name can be fixed by an admin in the course of approval.

Good luck with your project.

I wanted setup.py and dictionary.sql to be distributable without any conditions (either this, or public domain). I'm not exactly sure how a correct notice should look in such cases. Is the following acceptable?

# Copyright (C) $YEAR $NAME
# This file is free software; $NAME
# gives unlimited permission to anyone to copy and/or distribute it,
# with or without modifications. The permission is granted without
# any conditions.

I uploaded an edited version, if the files aren't OK let me know which mistakes I need to fix and should avoid in the future. Thank you :)

Hello,

a good decision helper about license notes seems to be a file size of more than 1KB, but less if the content is especially "clever". Some people call a file non-trivial as soon as it has more than 10 lines.

For cases where the license note would be bigger than the actual file there are more simple licenses, for example
# Copyright (C) $YEAR $NAME
# This file is free software; $NAME
# gives unlimited permission to copy and/or distribute it,
# with or without modifications, as long as this notice is preserved.

/setup.py needs a copyright & license notice on top.
calculator.ui too.

On a first look, everything looks fine so far.

Registration Details

  • Name: Blacherd
  • System Name:  blackherd
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v3 or later (Some parts of the project might bere licensed under other GPLv3-compatible free software licenses, where considered appropriate (for cases in which the part can be considered useful for inclusion in another software with a different license, for example Python module that might be useful to the whole Python community) or necessary for license compatiblity.)

Description:

Blackherd is a project to create a collection of minimalistic GUI programs written in Python. The project aims somewhere between of set of useful tools and a minimalistic desktop environment. It is targetting embedded devices running GNU/Linux, provide suitale environment and suitable tools for devices with touchscreens (like Neo 1973 and Neo Freerunner). The project currently contains a task panel, file browser, menu browser, half-baked calculator and half-baked dictionary tool, and the plans include things like picture viewer and digital camera control tool.

Other Software Required:

Python, http://python.org/, PSFL
PyQt4, http://www.riverbankcomputing.co.uk/software/pyqt/intro, disjunction of GPLv2 and GPLv3
pyxdg, http://www.freedesktop.org/~lanius/, LGPLv2 (might be dropped in the future)
dbus and dbus-python, http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/dbus, bindings are under X11 license and the daemon under GPLv2
libX11, http://x.org/, X11 license

Possible future dependancies (I list all that are needed for any of the ideas I have for the project):
Freesmartphone.org framework, http://freesmartphone.org/ GPLv2 or later
Telepathy, http://telepathy.freedesktop.org/, LGPLv2.1 and GPLv2, still haven't researched
twisted, http://twistedmatrix.com/trac/, X11 license
pybluez (and bluez), http://code.google.com/p/pybluez/, GPLv2 (any tools using the module would be GPLv2 or later)
Some PTP library or application (libptp2, ptpcam or gphoto2). All of them are free software, I would most likely be calling them, and not using them as a module or library

Other Comments:

Empty files and one-liner I do not consider elligable for copyright do not have copyright notices. I hope that if this is unappropriate, this won't lead to rejection of the project, but a notice to me to correct it before uploading files.
