Hi,

I'm Xah Lee and i'm a friend of Marco and currently hosts his emacs povray mode for him on my personal site at xahlee.org.

He asked me to help explain the situation a bit.

His code is just a emacs mode for povray, and is licensed under GPL, and does not include code from any other non-GPL source.

Marco is looking for a more long term place to host his emacs povray mode code so hopefully savannah.gnu.org is a good place. (I know Marco to be a devotee of the Free Software ideals, and i know Richard Stallman has personally exachanged emails with him in consideration of bundling his code in emacs 23)

Thanks.

Hi!

I think that in your explaining something is wrong. The mode I maintain is free software (under the GPL3). This is a major mode for GNU Emacs, for which I signed a copyright assignment to the FSF. Richard Stallman asked me to do so for inclusion in GNU Emacs and the process is going on.

I'll make an example: kpovmodeller (a modeller for POV-mode) is shipped with every version of KDE and is free software.
If you don't want I upload the tarball with the template files (which license should the the POV-Ray license but the POV team itself is not sure about this because these files can be freely inserted in the file scenes) I won't do so, and I will try something else. (I could rewrite this stuff). But the code itself is free as free speech, even if talks about a "proprietary" program (I consider this "non-free", but not proprietary). Please see the wikipedia page about the POV-Ray license.

However, someone is wrong: or RMS, asking me to track the previous maintainers and contributors of the code, to sign and send the paper, or you, denying me a couple of kilobytes for this project.

So, I'm waiting for a reply.

Regards

Marco Pessotto

Hi,

The POV license is proprietary (for example I can't take bits of its code for inclusion in my own project, check http://www.povray.org/source-license.html). Version 4 is planned to come with a better license, but apparently not to be expected soon. It's interesting to note, however, that POV did change its license between version 3.5 and 3.6, but avoiding becoming a free software license on that occasion.

Your package is directly referencing a proprietary software and is enticing people to use it. As such, we cannot accept it at Savannah. We cannot host files under the pov-ray either, because we only host files under free licenses.

Please help make POV free software. When this happens, we'll be happy to host your project at Savannah.

Regards.

Registration Details

  • Name: pov-mode.el
  • System Name:  pov-mode
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later (I'd like to upload a separate package with the templates, released under the POV-Ray license. It's not strictly a free license but cannot be considered a proprietary software.)

Description:

a GNU Emacs major mode written in elisp for editing POV-Ray scenes. It supports formatting, synthax coloring, rendering from within Emacs, template insertion, keyword look-up, preview.

Other Software Required:

The only dependency to get it work is GNU Emacs. GPL3, http://www.gnu.org/software/emacs

Other Comments:

I don't think that the fact that POV-Ray has it own license can be considered a dependency. It's just another Emacs major mode.
As i wrote above, I'd like to upload a separate package with the templates, released under the POV-Ray license. It's not strictly a free license but cannot be considered proprietary software.
At the moment this project is hosted by a personal site (xahlee.org) and cannot be considered a long-term solution.
I've sent the papers for the copyright assignment to the FSF (but i've not received the confirmation yet).
