Hi,

Using proprietary software when there is no free alternative is a problem; we do not allow this at Savannah (unless the plug-in is hosted separately).

Anyway we don't open accounts for mirroring purposes only, indeed. So I'll close this submission.

Hi, in upcoming 1.9.1 I'm going to move it to an external plugin in order to let the base package containing no closed source software.

RAR is handled through a frontend for 7z and POSIX-7z binaries from 7-Zip project (LGPL); for what I get from that project's documentation the RAR plugin was rewritten from Igor Pavlov (author of that project) and was kept on a standalone .dll/.so because also if it is now open source in the sense the source is known, it still keep the original intellectual property exception cast from the original RAR author: the decompressor code cannot be used to reverse engineering the RAR formato to obtain a functional RAR compressor.

This can be a problem. I'm quite satisfied of the level of service and very satisfied of functionalities offered on SourceForge and I was considering opening a Savannah account primarily to provide an high quality mirror for the content to make it available when SourceForge is down (it happened while I was publishing 1.8 version) or slowed down (it still happens quite often).
If your policies doesn't allow that kind of use of Savannah account, I'm sorry and I apologyze for the time it took examining my request.

(I'm an admin an reviewing closed projects that needed to be activated)

There's a problem with your submission: your application relies on proprietary software (abeilt royalty-free) for handling the .ace file format. I'd also like precisions about the RAR format, this is not described in the readme.txt file (there is a free extractor for version 2 and a non-free for version 3 if I recall correctly).

Also, I don't know if that was mentioned, but we do not allow to host your project on Savannah and SourceForge at the same time, if Savannah is just a project mirror.
Your project development should happen primarily on Savannah.

How do you plan to use your Savannah account?

Please provide us with these information, and apologizes for the false initial approval.

Regards.

Thank you very much, the important thing is that you are ok now.
PeaZip 1.9, containing several improvements over 1.8.x series, is ready, I'll publish it asap.

I'm very sorry for the day; I was in a motorcycle accident, and my place of recovery has had very spotty net access.

I have approved your project.  You will receive an automated e-mail containing detailed information about the approval.

Regards.

Hi, I just updated PeaZip project to 1.8.1 version (available on SourceForge) and I replaced the copying.txt file with the latest revision of LGPL license (v3) linked in your last response; all .pas source files has copyright notice at the beginning (after the changelog area), pointing to up-to-date online document http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.txt (the same I saved as copying.txt).
I hope this time all is OK; thank you in advance for your attention

I apologize, I gave you the wrong address for the FSF:

The address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA

Please update your license notices.

Please update the copy of the license (usually, the 'COPYING' file) in your package as well.

Updated versions of the GPL, LGPL and GFDL can also be found at:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt

Hi,
I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah. I apologize for the delay; we've been dealing with a large backlog of submissions.

Before releasing your project under the GPL, please place
copyright notices and permission to copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.

In addition, if you haven't already, please copy a copy of the plain text version of the GPL, available from
(http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt), into a file named "COPYING".

Additional instructions are available from
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example, go to http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude

The address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

  59 Temple Place, Suite 330
  Boston, MA  02111-1307
  USA

Please update your files.

Would you please agree to license under the "GNU GPL v2 or later"?

The reason for this is that when we publish GPL v3, it will be
important for all GPL-covered programs to advance to GPL v3.  If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to GPL v3 would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that maybe very difficult.

We can explain the issue in more detail if you wish.  If you have concerns about "GNU GPL v2 or later", We'd be happy to address them too.

To help us better keep track of your registration, please use the tracker's web interface following the link below. Do not reply directly, the registration process is not driven by e-mail, and we will not receive such replies.

Regards,
Michael

Registration Details

  • Name: PeaZip cross-platform portable archiver
  • System Name:  peazip
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU Lesser General Public License

Description:

PeaZip is a cross-platform portable archiver.
Features archive volume spanning, compression, authenticated encryption; allows to save jobs composed in GUI as command line.
The program acts as frontend for some command line open source compressors, with suitable licensing model form the user and from third parts.

Full support: 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2, GZip/TGZ, PAQ8F, PAQ8JD, PAQ8L, PEA, QUAD, split (.001), TAR, ZIP.

Browse/extract support: ACE, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, ISO, Java archives (JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux installers (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM), LHA, LZH, PAK/PK3/PK4, Open Office file types, RAR, Windows installers (NSIS, some MSI), Z.

Sources, documentation (.pdf) and precompiled binaries packages for Linux and Windows are available on: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=178996

More information can be found on the project's webpage: http://peazip.sourceforge.net/peazip.html

The project is developed in FreePascal using the open source IDE Lazarus (LGPL): http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/

Other Software Required:

For compilation of sources in FreePascal Lazarus IDE is required.
For running the Linux binaries dependencies are usually satisfied on a typical Linux system because almost of the libraries are statically linked; if unresolved dependencies are found the first time peazip binary is started it usually involves gtk/gdk related libraries, which are very standard and widely available, so the problem should minimal for an average user and however it is fully documented on the project's website.

Other Comments:

PeaZip version 1.7 is jet published on SourceForge however I have version 1.8, containing several improvements expecially for Linux platforms, ready to be published.
Since SourceForge upload is down for unknown problems in those days I'm looking to a new free software repository (and Savannah is probably the best) to publish this 1.8 release and next releases of my work to avoid to be blocked by similar problems in future.
