Thank you Sylvain and Alexander, for help. I hope to contribute to the Savannah project(s) in the future, not necessarily for Fim.

So, I thought about it and decided a roadmap for my project on Savannah.

Within the next 3-4 weeks i'm going to finish a full-featured beta version, hopefully stable (i messed up things well in these days, adding key features and key bugs), and then start using the Savannah SVN repository, open a mailing list, and such stuff.

Meanwhile yes, I volunteer for a SVN repository account, as long as I can be sure of the reliability of the service.
Then, i'll mark the Fim project out of autistici, for sure.

Hi,

As Alexander pointed out, we offer SVN in testing phase, such as:
https://savannah.nongnu.org/svn/?group=pngpp
http://svn.sv.gnu.org/viewvc/?root=pngpp

Would you volunteer for a SVN account and mark the autistici project as moved?

I renamed the project to fbi-improved internaly and approved it.

Hi.

Well, nice!

"Your source code looks good. You also need to update your copy of the GNU GPL (which carries the old address). "

I updated the address to '51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA 02110-1301 USA' in the COPYING file (which will remain GPLv2).
The program's license will be (for now) "GPLv2 or later", as said before.

"How do you plan to use the Savannah services?"

Well, I have read http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/WhenSvN
and discovered that SVN is still not active, so I would not use repository services on Savannah until SVN is not there.

"(In particular, we do not wish Savannah to be used as a mirror.)"

I wish to use Savannah as some sort of official page for my project, so with an official releases directory and announcements, and a mailing list.
In this way, I think Savannah would be the official 'mirror'. I think this is the encouraged way of Savannah usage.

"About the system name: how about using fbiimproved or fbi-improved?"

Good idea, thank you!
Let the system name be "fbi-improved"!

Thank you for guiding me through the Savanization of my project.

Cheers.

Hi,

Your source code looks good. You also need to update your copy of the GNU GPL (which carries the old address).

One last thing: your code is currently hosted at http://code.autistici.org/
How do you plan to use the Savannah services?
(In particular, we do not wish Savannah to be used as a mirror.)

About the system name: how about using fbiimproved or fbi-improved?
Otherwise we can keep the fiv name, there's no problem with that.

Hello again,

I added the missing copyright notices to the original fbi files, even though they didn't contain any copyright notice:
So I added a notice styled like the following one:

"    (c) 2007 New Maintainer
     (c) 1998-2006 Old Maintainer

    This program is free software..."

Please see src/fbi_src/filter.c in the repository for an example.

"If you make it clear that it's a different project, so there's no confusion, that'd be ok."

Yes, I wrote this ('my') program named 'fim' although I didn't know https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/fim, by another author, already existed and was registered.

"In principle I've checked all the issues. Unless there's something I missed, you should be OK with your upcoming updated release."

Maybe the project name is the last remaining problem: my package
(and the binary file) is still named 'fim', not 'fiv', as the proposed "System Name" for Savannah.
If it is not a problem (although it gives rise to confusion), i would like to keep all of the files in the package named 'fim' and not rename all massively to 'fiv'.

"But i wish to ask : if in the future the project name 'fim' gets freed (say the fim owner ), will be there a way to get it for my project ?"

If you make it clear that it's a different project, so there's no confusion, that'd be ok.

In principle I've checked all the issues. Unless there's something I missed, you should be OK with your upcoming updated release.

"Yes, you need to keep the 2 copyright notices: the original one, and yours.

It is preferable to use the complete copyright notice (including the word "Copyright" though we won't enforce it at Savannah)."

Well, I am departing right now for vacation. So when I'll be back, in 2 weeks or so, I'll implement these changes too, keeping the complete original copyright notice besides mine.

Could I ask if there are other issues I should care about, too?
( For instance the ones about the 'system name'(fim vs fiv) as i pointed out in the submission comments ).

Best Regards,
 Michele

"Should I add this copyright in the ones modified from the original fbi, too?"

Yes, you need to keep the 2 copyright notices: the original one, and yours.

It is preferable to use the complete copyright notice (including the word "Copyright" though we won't enforce it at Savannah).

Ok, thanks, I understand the point. I added a copyright notice with  my full name on it on all of the files that were not originally in fbi. Should I add this copyright in the ones modified from the original fbi, too?

Hi,

The copyright notice needs to refer to a legal person - so you need to use your full name, not your nickname.

"- Regarding the license, as long as i keep it "under GPL version 2 or later" i am free to decide, right ?"

You mean deciding to switch to GPL3? Yes, that's fine.

Sylvain Beucler <Beuc>
Wed 15 Aug 2007 05:52:12 PM UTC, comment #7:

- Well, the currently used libraries should all be compatible:

GNU Readline
libjpeg
libpng
libtiff
Libungif

- Regarding the copyright, i have read the raccomended document:
http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html .

So, could it be "Copyright (C) 2007 dezperado"  right before
"This program is free software..." ?

- The updated address ("..51 Franklin Street..") was updated :
please see the files in the repository : http://code.autistici.org/svn/fim/src/

- Regarding the license, as long as i keep it "under GPL version 2 or later" i am free to decide, right ?

Cheers

fbi is released under GPL version 2 or later - indeed this means there's no problem.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html says that the VIM license is compatible with the GNU GPL - no problem either.

For your code:

- You added the license notices, but did not add appropriate copyright notices.

Please check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for more information, and update your files.

- Still the "old FSF address" issue. Note that if you upgrade to GPL v3 you won't have to maintain the address ;)

- Can you detail the libraries you use, so we can check if they are compatible with the GNU GPL?

Regards.

Hi,

I noticed this paragraph in the 'fbi' [1] (the program upon which Fim/Fiv is based) man page (in fbi.man).

"This  program  is  free  software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version."

Please let me know if the licensing issues are resolved in this way.

Hi Patrick!

I am reading http://www.gnu.org/licenses/rms-why-gplv3.html to learn about the GPLv3. I discovered one potential problem to licensing this software under the GPLv3 (as I would wish).

Currently, the original 'fbi'[1] code, upon 'fim/fiv' is based, is GPLv2.

I modified some original 'fbi' files, and I distribute them in this software.

So, I argue, I cannot upgrade my whole fim/fiv program to GPLv3, but I have to keep GPLv2 (with the new address), right ?

I'll post the 'updated' tarball to the tracker as soon as you indicate me the right licensing.

Currently, I posted an 'old-addressed' tarball.
Please consider I'll change the FSF address when the correct license is decided.

Another issue are the doctags.c and vim2html.pl files, which were taken from the Vim distribution as part of the Vim documentation build programs. Here they serve as helper programs building the documentation. The Vim documentation says Vim is 'GPL compatible' , so this shouldn't be a problem. Even for the GPLv3, as Vim is not GPLv2, but 'Charityware'.

Hope my considerations are correct..

ciao

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

The address of the FSF has changed, and is now:

51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor, Boston, MA  02110-1301  USA

Please update your license notices.

Please update the copy of the license (usually, the 'COPYING' file) in your package as well.

Updated versions of the GPL, LGPL and GFDL can also be found at:
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/lgpl.txt
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt

You can find some background and a possible migration script at https://savannah.gnu.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=3766

Please, could you upload your updated tarball to the Savannah's tracker ?? It will be more suitable to review it.

Cheers.

Registration Details

  • Name: FIV/FIM: Fbi IMproVed
  • System Name:  fiv
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License V2 or later

Description:

http://code.autistici.org/svn/fim/

FIV/FIM: Fbi IMproVed

Fim aims to be a highly customizable and scriptable image
viewer targeted at the users who are confortable with software
like the Vim text editor or the Mutt mail user agent.

It is based on the Fbi image viewer, by Gerd Hoffmann, and works in the framebuffer console (so, it is not an X progam! ).

It works on Linux boxes with the framebuffer device enabled.

Fim should differ from existing image viewers because of its embedded scripting language and configurability options (the .fimrc file should be its configuration file, in the style of most Unix programs).

It differs from the existing image viewers like kuickshow. eog, ... because it does not use nor requires X, but works in the framebuffer.

Its strength is the inspiration from Vim, like regulare expressions in image selection, integrability in external shell scripts, autocommands, and the inter
nal scripting capabilities.

It is coded as a mixture of C,C++,Yacc, and comes with a wrapper shell script for opening files which are on the web or convert file formats prior to displa
ying.

Other Software Required:

Only free software libraries are used :)

Other Comments:

I noticed that the name fim, as I desired, is already reserved on savannah https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/fim/.

I think you can't do nothing about it, and i doubt the savannah/fim author will agree to change its project name for me, so right now i choose another name for my project, for the sole purposes of being 'compatible' with savannah.

But i wish to ask : if in the future the project name 'fim' gets freed (say the fim owner ), will be there a way to get it for my project ?
