Hi,

As you could see it's OK to combine CPL and LGPL.
As a result I approve your project :)

Hi,

Testing is still an important part of the project. Whether it is run by users or developers doesn't really make a difference for the licensing issue - unfortunately.

Hi Sylvain,

I just read your submission about CPL on the licensing request. I didn't realize that your concern about CPL was about jUnit.

As jUnit is only used for testing ( not for the program itself), i wonder if it is really pertinent to actually ask about licence comptability... I will not upload the junit.jar, the package version of my application ( the jar ) will not embark it, nor the classes that depends on the jUnit API. The unit test are only used during developement for testing...

I didn't think about adding you in CC of the licensing request.
You can still check the progress in the savannah-register-public archive:

Hi,

No problem for the delay.

"If you chose to use the LGPL and to be hosted at Savannah, we will ask you to only host the GPL-compatible at Savannah; in this case this means not uploading your CPL and ASL dependencies in your repository."

Ok, if i got this right, i'm not to upload my run time dependancies  such as the jdom.jar or the log4j.jar ?  It won't be a problem, my project use Maven which keep those dependancies outside of the project folder.

I'll wait to see what -email is unavailable- has to say about CPL...

Thanks !

Hi,

Sorry for the delay, tizzef got busy with family issues.

In principle using the LGPL would solve the ASL2 compatibility. I have doubt about compatibility with the CPL, I'm asking -email is unavailable- what they think about it.

If you chose to use the LGPL and to be hosted at Savannah, we will ask you to only host the GPL-compatible at Savannah; in this case this means not uploading your CPL and ASL dependencies in your repository.

If due to the delay you do not intend to get hosting at Savannah, please tell me and I'll close this submission.

Hi Patrick,

So there is still incompatibility with Apache 2.0 ? What a shame... The Apache Foundation seems to have tried to make it as GPL compatible as possible...

For JDom, i don't think they'll consider it, and i don't want to ask them ( they are quite feed up as it is with this kind of licencing problem ).

Is there no way that i could just use a LGPL licence instead ? JBoss massively use jdom, log4j, ect... and their source code is under LGPL ?

"Do you agree with one of the previous propositions ?? "

I think you refering to dropping those dependency, well, frankly no. I don't want to make "bad code" with "bad api" just as a work around for a licence problem. I rather use LGPL instead. I always encourage free software ( and open source software) as i believe that access to code make better program... Free software should not lead to bad software ! At least from my point of view,...

Hi Romain,

"So it only leaves the problem of jdom."

Unfortunatly, we cannot say that !!

There are still two license problems. You can have a look at <http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html>. Here you can see the official position of the FSF about the Apache License 1.0, 1.1 and 2.0. It state that these licenses are incompatible with the GNU GPL.

Concerning the JDom license, we are thinking that it is not compatible with the GNU GPL too. We can ask a confirmation at -email is unavailable- (may take a while) to clarify the situation. The points 3 and 4 restrict name usage. These restriction make the JDom license incompatible with the GNU GPL.

Alternatively we may ask to the JDom developers to change their lincense to a compatible GNU GPL license (Expat/MIT/X11 or revised-BSD).

Do you agree with one of the previous propositions ??

Cheers.

Hi again Patrick,

I ask the jdom project about their licence. It's a not a Apache Licence v1 or v2, it's subset of a BSD licence :

"[The licence is] the shortest BSD ever.
and it might be GPL compatible!"

So I believe we really have to look at it to know for sure. As this custom licence is very short i just pasted below. I read it and i don't really see anything that make it incompatible with the GNU GPL.. but you're the expert ! :)

Hi Patrick,

<Are JDOM and log4j logger mandatory to your project ??>

No, any compliant JVM ( meaning gcj or the sun's jdk) provides a XML api and a logging API. Both those APIs are ugly and not very convenient but I can refactor my code to only use them. However this will take sometime and it will degrade the quality of my software ( jdom and log4j does not exist just for fun, they really are a better implementation than the jvm's.

<The only thing I said is that the Apache Licence is incompatible with the GNU GPL, and it is !!>

... or not ! :)

It's true that the following webpage states so :

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/info/Apache.html

... However, the following post : http://apache.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/02/24/1658225

clearly states the opposite !

The trick is that Apache version 1.1 was not compatible, but v2 has been modified to be compatible. Log4j is under the v2 ( http://logging.apache.org/log4j/docs/, at the very bottom of the page) so i can perfectly use it in my free and 'under GPL' software.

So it only leaves the problem of jdom.

As the jdom website states :
"JDOM is available under an Apache-style open source license, with the acknowledgment clause removed. This license is among the least restrictive license available, enabling developers to use JDOM in creating new products without requiring them to release their own products as open source. This is the license model used by the Apache Project, which created the Apache server. The license is available at the top of every source file and in LICENSE.txt in the root of the distribution."

However, i can't find, even in the sources, the version number of the licence ! Apache Licence V2.0 was released the January 2004, and jdom last release is September 2004, so jdom could be under the V2 ... or not ! :|

As jdom's team has stated on their website, they designed their apache style licence to be as permissive as possible, especially they have removed the "acknowledgment clause". Maybe this is enought to make it compatible with GPL ? I don't know, i'll try to find under which precise version of Apache Licence is jdom, and i let you know as soon as possible...

Ok, sorry for the delay i've been quite busy this last week.

I'll try to answer everything :

1. About GCJ: my project runs fine with it... It's no big surprise, it's pure simple, java.

2. About Java and GPL. I believed Sun has released the Jdk 6 under GPL but however they have not. They'll probably do so for jdk7 so... Anyway, my stuff works with GCJ so this not a real issue here...
(Sun has declared several month ago that the company will release JVM code under GPL, just google Java GPL and you'll find many data about it)

3. "And finally and unfortunatly, the Apache licence, Version 2 and 1 are incompatible with the GNU GPL"

Here i have to disagree. Apache Licence are permissive, everybody take apart, redistribute and even SELL it along with some ohter code. Here I just those two component but i don't compile against them.

I want my software to free so if there is REALLY a problem with those licence, because my code to "tight" with it, i COULD refactor it to the jvm logging API ( which is awfull) and even the JVM XMP parser ( which even more awfull)...

Hi,

I am waiting for an answer from you.

If within one week I still do not get a reply, I will remove your project. You will still be able to register it again once you have the time to deal with the registration issues.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah? If not, please tell us - we don't bite, and it will make us gain time.

Regards.

Hi,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

At first, you must determine whether your project can run on a Free Software Java suite (see http://www.gnu.org/software/java/ for more information).

We recommend you to test your project using GCJ and GNU Classpath, and ensure that your Java code runs on this Free Software Java suite.

GCJ is the GNU Compiler for Java, part of the GCC (GNU Compiler Collection).  The Classpath project aims to develop a free and portable implementation of the Java API (the classes in the 'java' package).

More information is available at http://gcc.gnu.org/ and http://www.gnu.org/software/classpath/ .

Please provide us with more information about this point.

Second point,in order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GNU GPL, please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every copyrightable file, usually any file more than 10 lines long.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the plain text version of the GPL, available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

If some of your files cannot carry such notices (e.g. binary files), then you can add a README file in the same directory containing the copyright and license notices. Check http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html for further information.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.  To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

And finally and unfortunatly, the Apache licence, Version 2 and 1 are incompatible with the GNU GPL. And the JDK 5 and 6 are released under the Sun Licence (see http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index_jdk5.jsp and http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp). I can't see any information talking about the GNU GPL. Please point me the URL from which you picked up the info.

Cheers

Hi,

It's been two weeks since i post my project, and i didn't get any email... I realise savannah's administrator must be quite overwhelmed, and i'll gladly wait if i have too... However, if i can help you in any way to speed process make me know !

Note, i believed i forgot to say that my app work fine with gcj, also.

Registration Details

  • Name: ProxyManager
  • System Name:  prxmng
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License V2 or later

Description:

ProxyManager ( i still hope to find a more sexy name) is little program designed to set ALL proxy configuration right on your linux distro ( could probably work on Mac OS X or Windows, but for the moment it aims at Linux).

The idea is to handle any kind of proxy configuration from your distro (kde or gnome settings, browser settings, gaim settings, etc...etc...)

I wish to release it under GPL ( V.2 , but i'll probably switch to V3 when it'll be released).

sources are available here : http://r.pelisse.free.fr/ProxyManager.tar.gz

Other Software Required:

The app is written in Java but does not use any Swing class. It's  dependancies are JDom ( described as an "Apache-style" licensed project on the jdom website) and the log4j logger ( Apache Licence 2.0). It used maven 2 as a build tools ( maven is also under Apache 2).

The project use a maven 2 plugin to build site and documentation from xdoc files. At last, jUnit 3.x is used to unit test the code, which is released under Common Public License Version 1.0.

Last be not the least, its compiled with the jdk5/6, and both has been released recently under GPL.
