Hi,

I got an email from Manuel Serrano confirming that Skribe's documentation is under the GPL.  Consequently, I updated the headers of the files in the `doc' subdirectory with a GPL header.

Is that all we need?  If so, then I guess we're all set.

Thanks,
Ludovic.

Hi,

My Arch repository is only browseable with Arch (tla):

  $ tla register-archive http://www.laas.fr/~lcourtes/software/arch-2005
  $ tla get lcourtes@laas.fr--2005-libre/skribilo--devo--1.2 \
        /some/directory

Or, once you've already got it:

  $ cd /some/directory
  $ tla update

I converted the images to PNG.

As for the documentation license, I emailed the authors of Skribe.  I'm not sure how long it will take before I get an answer but we'll see.

Thanks,
Ludovic.

Hello.

At first, your Arch repository is not browseable for me (403) so I cannot figure out easily what changes you made. Can you please provide me with something, where I can check out them? (URI? :))

At second, our layer say that the GIF patent become "free" first of October - read http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html

At third, I wouldn't prefer to guess what license a documentation has got.
You should ask the original author about it, if possible.

In the meantime, I did find those files that lacked the GPL header and updated them with the appropriate header (namely under the `src/guile/skribilo/engine' and `src/guile/skribilo/package' directories).

Sorry for not checking this earlier.  You can find the updated version in my Arch branch.

Thanks,
Ludovic.

Hi,

Sorry for not answering earlier, I was away from keyboard.

  • GPL Headers and `COPYING' File

The `COPYING' file is present and does contain a copy of the GPL.  Also, AFAIK, all source files (under the `src' directory) do contain a GPL header.  If you found files that don't, can you please point me to them?

  • Documentation Licence

The documentation is currently almost unchanged from that of Skribe (on which Skribilo is based).  It turns out that the documentation is licence-less in the Skribe package.  More precisely, documentation files did not contain any header and there was no file indicating a particular licence.  Since the whole Skribe package is distributed under the GPL, I'd assume that the documentation falls under that licence too.

If I were to choose a licence for the doc, I'd choose GPL anyway because there is no clear distinction between documentation and code, especially in this package.  What do you think?

  • GIF Images

The footnote at http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html specifies that the patent has now expired roughly everywhere, making GIF an acceptable format for Free Software.  Anyway, since I'm not too keen on keeping images in that format, I can convert them, of course.

Thanks,
Ludovic.

Hi,

I am waiting for an answer from you.

If within one week I still do not get a reply, I will remove your project.
You will still be able to register it again once you have the time to deal with the registration issues.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah?
If not, please tell us - we don't bite, and it will make us gain time.

Regards.

Hi,
I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

At first, in order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the GPL,
please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements at the beginning of every file of source code.

In addition, if you haven't already, please include a copy of the plain text version of the GPL,
available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt, into a file named "COPYING".

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html.

The GPL FAQ explains why these procedures must be followed.
To learn why a copy of the GPL must be included with every copy of the code, for example,
see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#WhyMustIInclude.

At second, for your documentation:
In order to release your project properly and unambiguously under the FDL,
please place copyright notices and permission-to-copy statements after the title page of each work.

In addition, if you haven't already, please add a copy of the FDL
(available from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html in various formats)
as a section of your works , and as plain text in a file named 'COPYING' (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.txt).

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl.html#SEC4

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/fdl-howto.html also covers additional points,
including a smaller notice that you can use in auxiliary files.

At third, please remove GIF image files from your project and replace them with an other format (such as PNG or JPEG).

Because of the patents (Unisys and IBM) covering the LZW compression algorithm which are used when making GIF files,
it's impossible to have free software to generate proper GIFs.  These patents also apply to the compress program.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html.

Furthermore please include a README file in the directory of your images and write there copyright and license notices of them down.
See also http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html

Description:
------------
  Skribilo is a document production system derived from Skribe [0].  It aims at allowing for the production of documents in a wide range of output formats (HTML, Lout, LaTeX, etc.) from a single source file, while providing fine-grain control over the output for each specific format.  It comes with a number of packages that provide markups to produce colored program source, formatted equations, pie charts, etc.

At first sight, Skribilo is yet another ``markup'' language, not unlike HTML, XML, etc.   However, Skribilo provides a complete, modular ``document programming framework'' based on the Scheme language, that makes it easy to customize document production or to write new packages.
It uses GNU Guile as the underlying Scheme implementation.

The current code base is available in my Arch archive [1] or at the following address: http://www.laas.fr/~lcourtes/software/arch-2005/skribilo/skribilo--devo/skribilo--devo--1.2/patch-32/skribilo--devo--1.2--patch-32.tar.gz
