Savannah's download server should not be used by official GNU packages.

Hello Davin,

To update the web-pages for a GNU project, you should use the project's CVS repository as explained on the website the Hugh referred to.
Any file you push to that repository will be copied to the project's directory on www.gnu.org
(e.g. the files in http://web.cvs.savannah.gnu.org/viewvc/grep/?root=grep are those that appear in http://www.gnu.org/software/grep ).

Currently no other methods are supported to update the web-pages (e.g. git).
Savannah administrators can not put files there directly (we don't even have access to that server).

Lastly, as general guideline, please do not put source-code or release archives there (e.g. tar.gz, zip, etc.). Only HTML,CSS,JS and similar web-related files should be hosted on www.gnu.org. (An exception is PDF,INFO and compressed archive of the manual for the program, not the program itself).

The location to make public releases is ftp.gnu.org , as explained in the maintainer's manual: https://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/maintain.html#Distributions .

Savannah also has a "downloads" server, and files can be stored there using ssh/rsync/scp:

See "Download -> RSync Access" section here:  http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/SavannahServices/ .

regards,
 - assaf

I would like you to put my manuals/jtw-manual/*.html

to www.gnu.org/software/jtw

Davin,

About the email you received, I've been through the full list of projects and there is (correctly) only one project listed as hosted (the one connected to this submission, which I have just approved), so I don't think there is a problem.  If anything crops up that doesn't look right, please let me know and I will look into.

Regarding CVS, please see [1] and let us know if there are any problems.

Will now close this task.

Best wishes

Hugh

Davin, sorry to keep you waiting.

Thanks for the changes - project now approved (list: having checked the maintainers list on fencepost; my earlier request about that can be ignored now).

I saw your query about CVS, and the copied email.

I think the email means I must have done something wrong in deleting the duplicate project we discussed before.  I will seek to sort that out; if I don't contact you, you can assume it is in hand.  Apologies.

About CVS, I will find out what steps are necessary and get back in touch with you.

Best wishes

Hugh

How do I go about creating a CVS repository?

I tried the following command:

cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.gnu.org:/web/jtw2 co jtw2

Here is what it comes back with:

Cannot access /web/jtw2/CVSROOT
No such file or directory

Actually I don't use Donald Knuth's color-mode.el so I might as well delete it from the J.T.W. installer module.

I have added copyright notices to the files that you have mentioned, and also to some other files that are in the installer module that you failed to mention.

Regards,

Davin.

Davin, thanks.  I think we are making progress.

List: (in anticipation) please could someone with fencepost access confirm that it's OK to approve this as GNU?  I think it will be as it's listed on gnu.org/software, but I just want to double check.

Davin: a few last points for you.

The following files need copyright& license notices:

- Makefile
- README.txt
- configure.

The following upstream files don't state copyright& license:

- dlisp/imported-stuff/color-mode.el
- dlisp/imported-stuff/dotemacs.el.

I can see the first file on Don Knuth's page at stanford.edu [1].  I read through and can't see any stated license on those downloadable files.  As it stands, the file without a stated license is technically non-free (see GNU Maintainer Information section 6.6 [2]).  I know it might not be easy, but could you please clarify the situation, write a replacement or do without the facility for now?

Maybe the "dotemacs" files are derived in a way I don't understand; if so, please forgive me.

It would be good to state more clearly, perhaps in README.txt, where the upstream code came from and the license(s) you believe it to be under.

Best wishes

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

I hope you are feeling well again.  I will reply in this forum so that all of our correspondence is in one place, and not having to constantly remind myself to CC: a messaage to the gnu users.

Yes it was a mistake on my part to create two distinct packages.

Please delete the other package.  (or could I do it?)

I have reviewed all of the files in the folder dlisp/ and have either removed them or added copyright notices to the top of them.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Davin Pearson

Davin, will reply here to keep things in one place to the greatest extent possible.  Will put a pointer to here in the other project.

I still don't understand why two Savannah projects have been opened: task #14088 (this one) and task #14096.  Please explain; without knowing why two projects are needed, it seems like approving both of them (or even either one) will just cause confusion and store up problems.  If only one project is needed and/or the submission was duplicated in error, please let me know.

Please use the comments facility here to discuss these submissions.

I can see that the .el files in dlisp/ mostly now have copyright notices.  But from a quick look I can see files that don't, including but not necessarily limited to: APerson.jtw, Makefile, assoc-old.el, b.js, b.php, z.php.  Such files need to be reviewed and either removed or have appropriate copyright notices applied.

Can you please thoroughly review the above.

Best wishes

Hugh

Davin, thanks, and sorry for not having gotten to this before. Unfortunately I have not been well.

I can't see that the issue I raised with copyright notices has been solved.  I linked to guidance on this before.  Please review in particular the dlisp/ directory.    Other areas may need work; if you have questions, please come back to me.

Please also comment on why two projects are required, and the purpose of each one.

Best wishes

Hugh

Davin, thanks for your email to me and the savannah-register-public list.  I have had a quick look at the source tarball [1].  It seems like many files are missing copyright notices, or the copyright notices are incomplete.  Guidance can be found at gnu.org [2].  Please review that and resubmit.  It would also be useful if you could make sure the source and licence on upstream code is clear, perhaps by commenting in a README.  (please forgive me if I missed that.)

It would be a great help if you could upload the revised source tarball here so we can keep things together, and use the comments facility here for discussions.

Please also clarify why two projects are required and the purpose of each one.

Once you have reviewed the above, I will be happy to look at these projects again.

Best wishes

Hugh

Davin, thanks.

It looks like there might be some confusion here (probably mostly introduced by me).

Unfortunately I might have missed the files you uploaded to this project.  My original message was concerned with being able to download the tarball from Savannah onto my machine, not with the contents of the file.  I can see now that I might have made a mistake in that respect, with apologies.

However, the files uploaded to this project seem to be concerned with the manual for the Java Training Wheels software, not with the software itself.  I had understood that this project was for approval of the software itself.  If that is the case, please upload a source tarball.  If not, could you explain, please?

Best wishes

Hugh

Thanks for submitting, and sorry for not picking this up before.

The tarball appears in my browser as just a filename, not a clickable link.  Please could you check and, if necessary, re-upload?

Will await your response before reviewing your other related submission so I can see things in the round.

Best wishes

Hugh
