Hello,

Thank you for providing the source code of the project.

First, to comply with the GNU Savannah hosting requirements, projects licensed as GPL must include the "or later" text to be compatible with future versions of GPL.
The current python file you've provided uses "GPLv2" but does not mention "or later".
For more information, see here:
https://savannah.gnu.org/register/requirements.php
http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/HowToGetYourProjectApprovedQuickly/

Second,
Using the non-free AAC encoder by default is in conflict with the savannah hosting requirements.
If a free AAC encoder is used by default (one which works as well or better than the proprietary encoder) it is acceptable to host code which allows fall-back to another encoder.

Otherwise, mention of non-free AAC encoder must be removed from the code to be hosted on savannah.

To continue, please upload a new archive with the updated code.

regards,
 - assaf

Hello,

Thank you for your response. I didn't realise that the server was being subjected to a DDOS that day. It is back up and running now, but I've included the current release file on this thread now (gzipped).

Thank you!

Hello,

Thank you for submitting a new project to host on GNU Savannah.

Please upload a tarball with the source code of your project using the "Attached files" section below. The URL you've provided (download.cgi) does not seem to work.

That will help in the submission process and in addressing the questions you've raised.

regards,
 - assaf

Registration Details

  • Name: Flac2all
  • System Name:  flac2all
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v3 or later

Description:

Flac2All is a parallel processing script that converts flac files to a range of other codecs. Existing in some form since 2005 it has grown quite popular for conversion of peoples music collections.

It is written in Python, and runs on Linux (FreeBSD support is in the works).

It is currently being hosted at googlecode (https://code.google.com/p/flac2all/) but they are shutting that down. As the project has grown it is getting harder and harder to constantly migrate. savannah.gnu.org has been around since I was young, and if accepted, I believe that this will be the last project migration I need to do. From thereon I can concentrate on the code itself.

Other Software Required:

python + modules (www.python.org)
flac (https://xiph.org/flac/)

The program can function with just these two dependencies. I've not included the others as they are optional, but the full list of currently supported codecs are visible on the googlecode page.

Other Comments:

Please contact me if you need more information or clarification.

Also, do you offer a way of migrating data off googlecode?

Having read you hosting requirements, I notice this section "To be hosted on Savannah, your project must be free software, and it must be kept independent of any non-free software. The package must not refer the user to any non-free software; "

My software has a module that does flac->aac conversion, using Nero's aac encoder for Linux (proprietery). This was used because at the time it was the only AAC encoder for Linux, and because it gave the best quality output. It was a request from users. In future I intend to write a module for a FOSS AAC encoder (probably ffmpeg/avconv based) and make that the default, but I am loathe to remove an existing feature users explicitly requested.

What is GNU.org stance on this part of my project? Would it be acceptable as is?
