Hello.

A comment on the license notices issue:

The Copyright & licensing information should be clear for every
copyrightable file.  However we have no way for sure to determine
whether a court would consider a specific file Copyrightable or not.
For text files (In a natural or formal language) we consider files
above 10 lines long to be Copyrightable.  This is a rule of thumb.
For files of other types assume it is copyrightable unless the
opposite is very and enough obvious.

Sometimes technical limitations don't allow this information to be
included inside the file itself (This is usually the case of binary
files) or it is especially undesirable to do so (Say, for lots of
files just above 10 lines or automatically-generated ones).  When this
happens the Copyright & licensing information for those files should
be included in a README file in the same (sub)directory or in the
top-level README.  Note it should be clear who's the Copyright holder
and what's the license of every file considered in the README.  A
proper example of such README file can be find at
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/emacs.git/plain/etc/images/README.

For more information, see http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.html
and http://www.gnu.org/prep/maintain/html_node/Copyright-Notices.html

Hope this is useful.

Regards.

hi alex,

thanks for your approval !

sorry for the 'fr.po', this was not intended to be "ad hominem" !

regards,
guillaume

Sorry if I was too strict. Note that the official criteria for copyrighteable material is about 10 lines, but that is not a hard limit -- purely functional code (such as interfaces) may get away without a copyright header.

Rules are not so clear cut. In my case, the fr.po file states "This file is distributed under the same license as the eLyXer package" since it didn't make much sense to include the full header, and bare-template.html has 16 lines but most of it is required XHTML content.

Since we agree on the principles, and you have been responsive to the requirements, I am accepting your submission. Welcome, and have fun!

I've approved your project--welcome on board! :-)

You'll receive a mail notification with further instructions shortly.

hi alex,

i understand your requirements, and share your goal of advancement of free sotware. that's why i would like pyctoh to be hosted here !

but, again, nobody wants a licence header in every single file (not even savannah [1][2], not even you [3][4]!)

i've already put a license notice in ctoh.ini.example and other dumb files. if you think this is not enough, you can delete my submission :(

cheers,
guillaume

Hi Guillaume,

Please understand that we have these obnoxious requirements for a reason. A few references:

We are asking more of maintainers than other hosting sites such as SourceForge or github, because we are more than a hosting site: we work together for the advancement of Free software. Again, we worry so that our users and developers don't have to. Anyone should be able to pick any file they want and use it in their projects with a compatible license.

If these requirements are too much for you then just let me know and I will delete your submission. When you are ready to take that little extra effort, just resubmit your project, OK? We will be happy to host it.

Thanks, Alex.

hi alex,

> There are still a good number of files without license header

nobody want a license header in every single file. everything in there is under AGPLv3. this is clearly stated in doc/overview.rst.

if this doesn't seem clear enough for savannah, you can bury my registration request :(

cheers,
and thanks for all the fish,
guillaume

Hi,

There are still a good number of files without license header: e.g. doc/user_guide.rst, db/init.sql. I just posted a few examples; please review all of your files and insert the required headers. (For documentation files we recommend inserting instead a "license footer" at the end of the file.)

Also, there are binary files which are not documented anywhere: all the SVG in doc/ for instance. You have to list all of them (or at least reference all of the places where they reside, such as "all SVG diagram files in doc/") in a README or similar. It should be more prominent than doc/license.lst.

Keep in mind that anyone should be able to audit this package in a few minutes, instead of the many hours it is taking us. Think of a GNU/Linux distribution such as Debian wanting to carry your package: if they don't see everything clear right from the start they will just skip it. They are volunteers over there (just as we are) and anything taking too long will not be done.

Finally, a recommendation: you should place of your source code in an src/ folder or similar, since it would make your directory structure tidier.

Thanks, Alex.

hi,

> config.py, ctoh.ini.example, db/bdctoh3.sql and others

done.

> Binary files should be documented in a README

done, in doc/license.rst, that will end-up in final html doc (included in main page at ./index.rst)
i didn't track logos (CNES, apache, squid, plone, etc..) copyright holders as i think it's under "fair use" clause...

> You seem to be using a proprietary tool to generate some DB diagrams

ouch ! this is hopefully not used anymore ! i removed these files.

> Any binary files subject to restricted ...

sure. this is free software to read non-free data. nothing new under the sun, huh :( ?

i've uploaded new tarball at  http://savannah.gnu.org/submissions_uploads/pyctoh-0.1.tar.gz

thanks !
guillaume

Hi again,

There are some pending issues:

  • Files config.py, ctoh.ini.example, db/bdctoh3.sql and others lack the required copyright header.
  • Binary files should be documented in a README file or similar: author, copyright and license information.
  • You seem to be using a proprietary tool to generate some DB diagrams (like db/bdctoh3.mpd); this is highly discouraged. Whenever there are free replacements they should be used.
  • Any binary files subject to restricted distribution but needed for development have no place in Free software. Developers receiving the code should have everything needed to make the project work, and (if you want your project to gain contributors and thrive) to extend it.

Can you provide an updated tarball so we can continue with the process? Thanks!

hi alex,

thanks for your swift answer !

i've uploaded a new tarball at http://savannah.gnu.org/submissions_uploads/pyctoh-0.1.tar.gz

binary files in doc/ are mainly inkscape output of my creation (sources included). they are quite transcient, as i've still to re-work the documentation.

on the other hand, files in data/ come from BEAT at http://www.stcorp.nl/beat/download/download.html (GPLv3). the reader is GPLv3, but the data it read (not found in the tarball) are subject to restricted distribution. audience is limited for that, so i will probably remove these in a near future, but for now, it helps me going on with developpements. i'll document this out, also.

please, register PyCTOH so that i can conveniently reorganize my mercurial tree !

thanks, guillaume.

Hi Guillaume,

I am reviewing your submission on behalf of Savannah. It seems that you have added license headers, could you upload a new tarball with them? The only headers in the current tarball say: "Copyright (c) 2009 Legos/CTOH. All rights reserved", not good at all.

Be sure to list the authors and licenses for all binary files in some place, e.g. a README file.

Thanks, Alex.

before you ask : I updated licence in doc/AGPL-3, COPYRIGHT, and each python source file, as you'll see on first mercurial push.
