Well, Mario already answered here: https://savannah.gnu.org/task/?10300#comment13. Indeed, it was a misunderstanding on my part from a message of his; it is perfectly fine to place the license header at the end. So I am closing this task.

Not that I doubted Yavor, but I wanted to be sure about it. As I said: "please excuse any mistakes in the process".

David, good luck with your project! Or, as we say in Spanish: ¡Felicidades, paisano!

This practice of putting the header at the end was specifically referred by Mario (while mentoring me) as one of the most common mistakes. Personally I don't have a problem with it, but I'm just a novice admin. Mario, could you please solve our doubts, please?

It is perfectly fine to put the license/copyright notice at the end of such files -- see existing GNU packages which have been doing this for years.  Needless to say, it would be extremely masochistic to put it on top of certain class of files, like ChangeLogs :-)

Hi Alex,

I just checked a couple of GNU packages to see how to deal with the legibility issue and some of them (emacs, guile, automake) were placing the license text at the end...

Would you please confirm that I should change that?

Many thanks for your support

Hi David,

This is one of the most common mistakes: placing the license header at the end of the file. I am afraid it is not acceptable; the header must always be at the top. It is true that it does not help legibility of the README, but on the other hand it makes crystal clear the license of the whole thing, without having to go to the COPYING file.

Since it is only a minor point and I don't want to be too bureaucratic, I am approving your submission; but I will keep this task open to check that you make the necessary changes. This way you can start hacking on Savannah and change the headers at your leisure; hopefully we are all happy. Let me know when it's ready, OK?

Hi Alex,

Please take a look to the new tarball. Hope now it is OK.

Many Thanks

Hi David,

I am reviewing your submission; I am quite new at this job so please excuse any mistakes in the process. There are a couple of minor issues with the tarball:

  • The copyright statement at the top says "(c) DeMO, 2006, 2009, 2010; (c) UWO Ltd., 2007, 2008". I understand that "DeMO" is not a legal entity, and I don't know about "UWO Ltd". It is better if you use only legal entities (for example your real name), although not necessary.
  • You need to put the license header at the top of the README, INSTALL and TUTORIAL files, instead of just a pointer to the COPYING file.

Can you correct at least the second issue and upload a new tarball? Thanks!
