I answered Jack via his ftp-upload query, so closing.  For the record, basic resource here is http://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/DownloadArea.  (Jack, feel free to let us know if problems persist.)

The account seems active, except that I have no ftp access yet. Is that normal? Does it take a few days for my public key to be accepted? If that's normal, you can go ahead and close this out.

Thanks.

Hi Jack,

Everything OK? Can we close this task? Thanks!

Yep, I just wanted you to make sure that everything is up and running correctly as it is my first approval. Once you do that I will close this task.

It's true that Savannah takes some learning. The great thing is: once it is set up you can script it and automate most of the administrative tasks. I haven't had a problem of things changing around and tools needing maintenance. That is to be valued!

Ok, I get it. You mean "You're approved. Have a look."

A bit of a learning curve to Savannah. Working on getting ftp access. Submitted my gpg key. Haven't heard back yet on that.

Congratulations on the promotion.

Tell me, what in particular am I looking for? Do I need to make sure the tarball I submitted is fully functional? Do you want me to double check that I have license headers in all my files? Is there anything that happens once LyXBlogger is approved that will be set in stone that can't be changed later if we misspell it or otherwise botch the initialization?

I still like GPL3, so that's in order.

Anything else you want me to specifically check over?

-Jack

Hi Jack,

I am an administrator now. My first task has been to approve your project; please double-check that everything is OK! Thanks.

That is right, they have to review my review and approve your submission. I am hoping to get my stripes soon (and become a full-grown admin) so that submitters don't have to wait so much, and to lessen other admins' burden -- after all, that was the point of volunteering for this job.

What stage is it at then? Is it being passed to a senior admin for final approval?

Yes, Karl: that was exactly the question. Thanks for your answer. I see no obstacle then for approval.

As to synchronizing releases, Jack's approach seems sensible. The biggest problem is with bug fixes, which must trickle down from the developer to eLyXer and then to LyXBlogger. The real solution is to have the LyX distributor cope with releases -- Debian's package management is a good example of how to do this. For now we can live with joint distribution.

As long as the GPLv2 package is actually GPLv2-or-later, rather than GPLv2 (and explicitly no later version), there is no problem combining it with GPLv3 code (whether GPLv3-or-later or GPLv3-only, although -or-later is always preferable).  Hope that was the question, if not, let me know.

There's a compatibility chart somewhere in http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html, FWIW ...

Best,
Karl

Regarding synchronized releases, I think something along those lines is a good idea. At a minimum I'd like to make sure whatever versions of LyXBlogger I put out have the latest stable release of eLyXer in them, for the benefit of the user.

As for whether I'll want to roll a new version of LyXBlogger if nothing has changed except a new version of eLyXer, I have mixed feelings about that. If the changes made in eLyXer were significant from a blogging perspective, I'd definitely roll a new release. But then again, some people may put more elaborate formatting in their blogs than I do in mine.

As a fallback, there is an optional setup file in lyxblogger, setup-no-elyxer.py which will leave the user's current elyxer installation entirely alone. This would be useful for anyone using a newer version of eLyXer than what came bundled with LyXBlogger.

I am open to suggestions regarding the best way to synchronize releases.

Hi Jack,

Welcome again! I hope that this time the project admins can approve your submission; I will again be reviewing it for them.

There are still a few minor issues with the submission:

  • The CHANGELOG now includes the license header, well done! But the README (and README.html) still don't.
  • There are a couple of images which should be listed in the README file along with author and license information.
  • You list this project under "GPLv2", but the LICENSE file and all source files show GPLv3. This is probably just a mistake.
  • You are including in the package both my own eLyXer and wordpresslib.py. First: I feel honored. Now, there should be no problem with eLyXer since it's also under the GPLv3, but the license of wordpresslib is GPLv2. Since you are using both libraries inside LyXBlogger they need to have compatible licenses; I believe this is the case (wordpresslib can be distributed and used under the GPLv3 so all three packages should be compatible), but it's a complex issue and I would like to have a second opinion.
  • Something to keep in mind: if you include elyxer.py in your package we should keep it synchronized so users always get the latest version. This should not be hard to do since you are subscribed to the eLyXer users list and new releases are always announced there, but you need to understand and acknowledge the effort required.

Could you correct these issues (really just the first two) and provide an updated tarball? Once the licensing for wordpresslib is reviewed I will recommend its approval. Thanks!
