I don't quite follow the issues raised there, because it seems to be related to how are packages made in gentoo. libopts is a separate package of autogen. Autogen even puts the libopts tarball in /usr/share/autogen/libopts-*.tar.gz.

In any case, libopts is an optional dependency of gnutls. You can always compile without it.

I'm just relaying second-hand information here, but according to the discussion of this issue on the Gentoo bugtracker[1], libopts is not inherently separate from autogen. libopts is, indeed, part of the autogen package and whatever else may be shipped on other distros is a downstream split of the two.

libopts is a separate from autogen library in all distributions. You'd better file a bug in gentoo not to bundle it with autogen. There is nothing gnutls can do in that case.

Turns out, the dependency on autogen is because Gentoo debundles libopts and therefore installs autogen to provide it.

I guess this can be closed with the minor remark that it would be beneficial if GnuTLS had used an established, stand-alone config parser library rather than using autogen's internal libraries!

GnuTLS does not depend on http://www.gnu.org/software/autogen/ if that's what you mean.

GnuTLS has had an optional dependency on Guile for several years (for the Guile bindings), but it's optional.

As of somewhere between v2 and v3, GnuTLS starts to depend on autogen. It would be much desired if that dependency could be avoided, since (considering autotools is a questionable buildchain to choose for new projects these days) this comes with a dependency on Guile/Scheme.

It would be nice if whatever is the reason for that new dependency could be solved by simpler means.
