hi kai - as far as digests are concerned, i believe there is a bug in the mailman cron setup that sends them out. i hope it will be fixed soon, if not already ... -k

The Mailman digest feature has a few known mis-features. There are gremlins there.  I suggest turning off digest mode and using the normal subscription.  That might work better.

Finally also received an adonthell-commits digest, containing all pending mails from April and May. So seems to be working in principle, just not the daily digests. But I can live with that.

Thanks again for your help and advice. This ticket can be closed :-).

For adonthell-commits, I did not receive any mail for May (and none for April either). Only receiving digests, but according to the mailman settings those should be generated daily.

As for adonthell-devel, reply by another user brought those to my inbox, so consider that part resolved.

Unsubscribing and subscribing shouldn't have any difference in effect.  And paraphrasing the old saying, there shouldn't be any difference between theory and practice.

kai - just to make sure: you're not getting any of the adonthell-commits mail, right?  none of your four commits so far in May?
it's not that you see some and fail to see others, but that you see none?

The messages to adonthell-devel are all in my Sent folder, so yes, this might explain that part. (Could be my filters applied at least the Adonthell label when they were received by the list again, but I am not certain if this was ever the case or not)

However, the messages to adonthell-commits originate from the CVS server on commit, so those at least should show up in my inbox, but they don't.

What I just did is deleting all my filters in gmail, in case they somehow stopped working as advertised. I'll keep them disabled until the next CVS commit. Obviously, they shouldn't make any difference for mails sent by me.

If that fails, I might try to unsubscribe from the list and subscribe again, though I don't think this would make a difference.

Anyway, thanks for your help so far. Maybe I can also get one of those lazy list-users to finally reply and see if that makes a difference ;-).

Are the messages in your Sent folder?

I don't know if what I am going to say is the problem or not but here is what I know about problematic Gmail accounts.

As far as I know Gmail doesn't show you messages in your inbox that were sent by you. There is a Google FAQ on it somewhere. (That I failed to find quickly enough for this reply.) Instead Gmail tags it into your "Sent" folder and therefore it doesn't show up in your inbox.  Gmail thinks that you saw the message when you sent it, the message was tagged as Sent and appears in your Sent folder, and therefore Gmail doesn't show you the message again in your inbox.  I think that is wrong behavior but Gmail disagrees.

However as soon as someone replies to one of those messages then the respondents message will show up in your inbox.  And because it is a reply to one of yours that was in Sent the reply will drag the original message from you into your inbox along with it. This creates very tragicomical behavior most of the time in that sent messages are invisible until someone replies to them.  They become visible in the inbox only when they are replied to.

However if you have a filter rule in place this can be used to tag messages into your inbox anyway and overriding the default behavior.  You mentioned filter rules so maybe yours stopped functioning?

Additionally Gmail has a list of addresses for you.  If that list changes and either adds or removes addresses for you then mail sent from other addresses that are still you will be either recognized or not and if recognized as an address that is you then it goes into sent instead of inbox. Maybe your own address is being recognized now whereas before it was not?

Since all of the messages that you referenced as missing from your inbox were from you but they were delivered to the mailing list archive this failure signature matches the above typical Gmail misfeature behavior exactly making me very suspicious this is the same old issue.

Hi Karl!

Unfortunately, they aren't in the Important folder, and not in Spam either. I do have a rule set up which assigns them a Label and prevents them from ever going to Spam:

  Matches: subject:(Adonthell-devel)
Do this: Apply label "Adonthell", Never send it to Spam

That's still working though, because when asking a few other people whether they received their E-Mail, it correctly applied since I also had adonthell-devel in the subject.

(Basically the label maps to an IMAP folder, and when syncing that I discovered that they were missing. Only have them in my Sent folder).

Also wondering if this might have something to do with the mail issues 5 days ago: https://pumprock.net/fsfstatus .

OTOH, newer mails should have arrived after the issue was fixed. But even something sent out a couple minutes ago did not make it back:

hi kai - i haven't been able to find the right logs yet, it seems. i will keep trying.

however, i do have one wild speculation: a friend's gmail account suddenly seemed to stop receiving some messages, for no apparent reason. we eventually discovered that google had invented an "important" folder and decided on its own to start putting mail that it deemed important there.  so they didn't show up in the normal google inbox.  so ... couldn't hurt to take a quick look and see if the mails are there -- or in the spam filters of course, but i suppose you already checked that.

Dear Savannah Hackers,

I recently noticed that I no longer seem to be receiving E-Mails from my project's (Adonthell) mailing lists (adonthell-devel, adonthell-commits, possibly others too).

There isn't much activity on the lists, so I cannot exactly point to a date where it stopped working. It was OK in January, but failed end of April. Specifically, all mails starting with that one
  http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/adonthell-commits/2016-04/msg00000.html
respectively that one
  http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/adonthell-devel/2016-04/msg00000.html
did not arrive in my inbox. Being the list administrator, I checked if my subscription was disabled or the "not metoo" option was suddenly turned on, but neither was the case. Everything looks normal.

I asked a couple of the other list-users that also use gmail.com addresses and they all received their E-Mails.

So my question is: can you see in your server logs if any of the mails in question were actually delivered to kai dot sterker at gmail dot com (in which case I'm probably doomed)? If they weren't delivered, would it be possible to figure out the reason and fix it?

Thanks for your kind help. Regards,

Kai
