It has been over a year with no further activity on this bug ticket.  The consensus from the Savannah side is that this is not a problem and that there isn't anything to be fixed.  Therefore I am closing this bug as a wontfix. Sorry.

In response to my query Fabio Pesari responded by email outside of the bug log and therefore I copy it here to keep the bug log history complete.

I don't see any problem.  I don't see why it is inconsistent.  It is only required in the savane code that the email field be unique so that it can be used to uniquely look up entries in the database.  Basically it is because both the login field and the email field are used for database uniqueness.  Really only the login field should ever be used in the savane strategy.  As long as the string is unique I don't see any problems with users using different emails that deliver to the same location.

since it is trivial for any address to forward to any other address, something which we would have no way to know, it seems pointless to worry about addr+suffix@domain.

as far as i can imagine, the real point of not allowing the same addr to be associated with multiple accounts is to not to prevent someone from registering twice, but so that lost passwords and other such account-related email has a unique destination.
there's no problem with addr+suffix in that case.

best,
karl

I need clarification.  For what purpose are you submitting this support ticket?  I don't know what action one should take with it.  Does something need to be done?  Does some action need to be taken?

Even though Savannah will not allow multiple accounts to share the exact same email address, flashing this error:

> An account associated with that email address has already been created.

this can be bypassed by using a plus sign in the email. For example:

-email is unavailable-

will allow

-email is unavailable-

to register even if an account is already present.
