Anonymous, and anyone reading along;  See http://opencobol.add1tocobol.com/gnucobol/#are-there-pre-built-gnucobol-packages and http://opencobol.add1tocobol.com/gnucobol/#what-is-the-current-version-of-gnucobol

for some technical details.

Yes, you should be able to download to a laptop and transfer to a desktop for install.  You have choices for MinGW, or visual studio pre-builts, and the source tar ball is the same for all platforms.

Sorry Peter, both for not picking this up sooner and for the not knowing.

If you have a POSIX C, it should work, but it might well require significant effort on Windows.   With Cygwin, it'll work.  With MinGW, it'll work.  Visual Studio will do as well, and there are hints and (older) binaries at http://kiska.net/opencobol/index.html

It is hard to say if it will work on your laptop without trying.

I would like to get the cobol compiler working on my desk top machine (windows XP) which is not connected to the internet - I transfer data via removable disk from my sheep-dip (does that date me?) laptop which is periodically attached with a very slow internet connection (16-20KB/sec - Bulgarian village technology!)

I suspect I have some version of C on the desk-top.  Is there some way I could ascertain if my C status is good enough for you compiler, and can you confirm that I can download to my laptop but install on my desktop?

Thankyou for any help you can offer.
