Thanks for the report.  This required rather more of an involved patch than I figured at first.  It will be fixed in the next release of readline.

Please cc -email is unavailable- next time.  It was only by chance that I noticed this.

In bash with "set -o vi" in effect, typing:

$ echo foo foo

then pressing:

RETURN ESC - f f R b a r ESC ; .

should result in the line showing "echo bar bar" and command mode in effect, but instead the result of the final . is that no change is made to the second foo and insert mode is in effect.

Tested on Debian 6.0.3 with packages bash 4.1-3 and libreadline6 6.1-3
