Sylvain,

It looks like this is a firewall problem on my end.  Therefore lets close this support request.

Thanks for your help.

cheers,
Jim Parker

I can commit to your repository if I impersonate you:

[me@wolf tmp]$ cvs -d:ext:hjparker@savannah.nongnu.org:/webcvs/gtkcad co gtkcad
[me@wolf tmp]$ cd gtkcad/
[me@wolf gtkcad]$ ls
CVS
[me@wolf gtkcad]$ touch BABA
[me@wolf gtkcad]$ cvs add BABA
cvs add: use 'cvs commit' to add this file permanently
[me@wolf gtkcad]$ cvs ci -m "Test" BABA
RCS file: /webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/BABA,v
done
Checking in BABA;
/webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/BABA,v  <--  BABA
initial revision: 1.1
done

(I then removed the file).

My version of CVS in Debian stable does support the -t option:
[me@wolf gtkcad]$ cvs -t ci -m "Test" BABA
 -> main loop with CVSROOT=:ext:hjparker@savannah.nongnu.org:/webcvs/gtkcad
 -> Starting server: ssh -l hjparker savannah.nongnu.org cvs server
 -> Sending file `BABA' to server

S-> Parse_Info (/webcvs/gtkcad/CVSROOT/verifymsg, gtkcad, not ALL)
RCS file: /webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/BABA,v
done
Checking in BABA;
/webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/BABA,v  <--  BABA
initial revision: 1.1
S-> rename(/webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/,BABA,,/webcvs/gtkcad/gtkcad/BABA,v)
done

S-> fopen(/webcvs/gtkcad/CVSROOT/history,a)

 -> unlink_file(CVS/Base/BABA)
 -> Register(BABA, 1.1, Fri Mar 11 21:42:16 2005, ,  )
 -> rename(CVS/Entries.Backup,CVS/Entries)
 -> unlink_file(CVS/Entries.Log)
S-> unlink_file(CVS/BABA,t)

Do not use the 'SSH2' package, it is a non-free one. The stable version of *Open*SSH already has support for the SSH protocol version 2.

Can you try the same comamnds than I did above?

Also, please tell me the content of CVS/Repository and CVS/Root.

Sylvain,

I just thought of something.  My development machine is Debian stable, and I am probably using the OpenSSH package.

Should I be using the SSH2 package ?  I know savannah uses protocol 2 for ssh sessions.

Just a thought.

Jim Parker

Sylvain,

Here is a transcript of a typical attempt at trying to check-in my web page files.  One thing I find strange it therdoes not appear to be much trafic going out my home network (based on DSL modem lights ;-)

cvs ci -m "Initial version" index.html
Enter passphrase for key '/home/jparker/.ssh/ida_dsa':
Read from remote host savannah.nongnu.org: Connection timed Out
cvs [commit aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any )

The thing that drives me nuts, is there are no error messages to indicate what is going wrong.  My version of CVS  (Debian, stable, updated regularly) does not accept the -t switch you suggested I use.

It usually takes from 10 to 20 minutes before the connection times out.  The file in question is relatively small (only around a few kbytes ).

I use SSH to connect to my laptop the few times a actually use it.  The network uses DHCP, so my known hosts has several host entries for the laptop, plus one for savannah.

Comments and suggestions.

cheers,
Jim Parker

If SSH connection fails with public key, it will usually ask you for password.

Your SSH key looks good.

I also added some firewall configuration to get an immediate error message when CVS_RSH is not set.

Could you give me the exact command line you are trying to execute, along with the resulting output?

Using the '-t' (trace) option for cvs would also help :)

Sylvain,

I made sure the CVS_RSH="ssh" like you suggested, it did not work.

I checkout a new copy of my webcvs tree to my local box, and added a file.  It seemed to work OK.  But it again timed out when I tried to commit.

If the SSH fails to authenticate, will it let you checkout a module anonymously ?  Or will it give an error message ?

I was thinking of trying to generate a new ssh key and register that.  What do you think ?

Comments and Suggestions as always.

cheers,
Jim Parker

Did you set $CVS_RSH to "ssh"?

Can you tell me what doc (eg the URL?)

> Do I need to create a directory for file storage,

No, this is not managed by CVS:
https://savannah.gnu.org/faq/?admin=&group_id=5802&question=How_do_I_add_files_in_the_download_area.txt

> or is the existing directory sufficent for simple websites ?

The webcvs repository is separated from the sources repository, and you need to use it to update your webpages.

Feel free to precise any question :)

After following the instructions, I am still not able to commit my website to the CVS repository.

I was able to complete the checkout procedure, and the CVS add procedure seems to have worked.

It fails by timming out.

1--  Do I need to import the files ?

2-- The docs suggest that you need to add a directory, but has little explanation as to why.  Do I need to create a directory for file storage, or is the existing directory sufficent for simple websites ?

Any suggestions as to why it is not working ?

I have been using CVS for my project on my local machine for several years, is it possible some of my environment settings are preventing this operation ?

cheers,
Jim Parker
