Greetings!  We are on the leave of a new stable release, 2.6.2.  The
documentation building has been updated, and no longer uses texi2html.
Until the final 2.6.2 tarball is put onto ftp.gnu.org, please try with

export CVS_RSH=ssh
cvs -d:ext:anoncvs@subversions.gnu.org:/cvsroot/gcl co -r Version_2_6_1
-d gcl-2.6.1 gcl

Building GCL 2.5.3 on Mandrake 9.1 Linux: texi2html resulted in a large number of "bad @node line" errors.  Offending lines came from included chap-1.texi (and possibly others).  I don't know tex-info, but in chap-1.texi it looks like the bad lines all contain words or phrases in double quotes.
