bash offers a built-in 'time' that outputs values to STDERR. I suggest it would be more useful to [also|instead] store the values in dedicated bash variables. An example of the benefit would include logging the time info of script elements or non-interactive shells, in conjunction either with trap DEBUG, or in-line commands.
