Hi,

I had some spare time and I made some changes on my project website. All statistics go trough my local AWStats instance with few mod_rewrite rules before being redirected to Savannah (+mirrors). I can track Savannah mirrors as well if the downloads starts at my project's website.

I won't be using the statistics on Savanah anymore. If no one else needs this and the only way is to stop it and close the issue, then it is fine with me. Still, if I can be of any help, I'm available.

Regards

It is true that mirrors are impossible to track, but I use a work-around. My project is a Userscript/JavaScript "binary" which Savannah is not tracking anyway. I track download statistics with an html file that points to the JavaScript file. The html file is always linked to the direct URL (non-mirror) on Savannah from the project website.

OK, I'm in no hurry. Don't worry. I have two more partial methods to track downloads. Thanks!

If it is impossible to fix, just let me know.

The stats on Savannah will not show the downloads from users using mirrors.  That would seem to be a big disadvantage.

I won't be able to get to it immediately but I will look into the problem in more detail and see about getting the awstats back online again.  It doesn't seem like it should be too hard.  I will leave the assigned-to open so that if someone wanted to jump in they should feel free to do so.

Hi Bob,

I'm using the Awstats output that Savannah provides to check the downloads statistics for a project hosted at Savannah. The rest of the provided information is not useful to me, since I cannot distinguish which is for my project. How often? Something like once a week/two weeks.

I guess other projects might use it for that too.

I have some experience with AWstats on my server. It is very picky about the config file permissions. From what I saw in the errors you provided, it might be:

  • wrong permissions for the config files, though it seems to read the log file
  • wrong LogFormat option, it usually equals 1 or 4 for Apache

If AWstats is causing a lot of maintenance and the only reasonable option would be to stop it, I'll live with it. I'll either stop using Savannah's download area and measure statistics on my own server, where the domain for my project is. Since I am using html files to measure download statistics I could have a resource at my own server that those files would referrer on my own domain.

Do what you find best to solve the problem. If I could be of any help, I would be glad to.

Ivaylo, You said you noticed that awstats was offline.  Survey time.  Do you regularly use awstats?  What information does it provide that you find useful?  Because one of the proposals to fix it is simply to shut it down as being unnecessary.  Would that cause any hardship?  Thanks.

I don't know anything about awstats but I do know that it is spewing error messages in the nightly run.  Here is the error.  Maybe showing this will spark recognition of the problem from someone who has seen it before.  I looked in the log file but the data looked okay to me.  If not then I will dig into it.

Create/Update database for config "/etc/awstats/awstats.conf" by AWStats version 6.95 (build 1.943)
From data in log file "/var/log/apache2/access.log"...
Phase 1 : First bypass old records, searching new record...
Direct access after last parsed record (after line 285021)
AWStats did not find any valid log lines that match your LogFormat parameter, in the 50th first non commented lines read of your log.
Your log file /var/log/apache2/access.log must have a bad format or LogFormat parameter setup does not match this format.
Your AWStats LogFormat parameter is:
1
This means each line in your web server log file need to have "combined log format" like this:
111.22.33.44 - - [10/Jan/2001:02:14:14 +0200] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 1234 "http://www.fromserver.com/from.htm" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows NT 5.0)"
And this is an example of records AWStats found in your log file (the record number 50 in your log):
173.177.131.229 - - [18/Nov/2013:23:58:47 +0000] "-" 408 0 "-" "-"
Setup ('/etc/awstats/awstats.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.
Setup ('/etc/awstats/awstats.conf' file, web server or permissions) may be wrong.
Check config file, permissions and AWStats documentation (in 'docs' directory).

Hi,

I've noticed that the Savannah download statistics [1] haven't been updated since 9th of November.

Also, there are some warnings about duplicate options in AWstats confugiration file.
