in the recent regeneration of the archives, finished a few hours ago, utf-8 was enabled.  the url at the end of this mail now shows cyrillic.  i am pleased and surprised :).

if issues persist, let us (or sysadmin@fsf.org, who control this stuff) know.

Hi Pavel -- thanks for the info.  The thing is, none of us here have any power to change the archiving code right now, only FSF sysadmins can do that.  And there's nothing to be gained to talking to them right now about a patch, because, as I said initially, there's already a project underway to update the archiving.  And the results of that will (do already) handle UTF-8 properly.

Aside: so Perl 5.10 changed the semantics of (un)pack.  How depressing.

Hi, Karl!

I may misunderstand something, but the bug report contains
an evident single-line patch; I can confirm it fixes my problem
(also I can confirm I don't know Perl, though).

And yes, there are some workarounds; for example, I downloaded
the archives in mbox format and was able to read all messages
with a mail program.

Please feel free to close this request.

An FSF sysadmin intern has made good progress on supporting UTF-8 in the archives properly.  I have no ETA, though.

Meanwhile, perhaps you can use gmane or some other archive mirror.

MHonArc does not
work correctly with UTF-8-encoded messages when
executed with newer Perl versions.

An example is
http://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/stribog-test/2010-11/msg00000.html.

The relevant MHonArc bug report is
http://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index.php?26577

It introduces inconveniences e.g.
for GNU Russian Translation Team.

Can anything be done about it?
