I attempt to clean-up the support requests list.
I added this in the tasks list.

I'm also interested in this. I already spam-filtered all of the Hurd's mailing lists and asked -unavailable- about installing the filtered mboxes, but didn't receive a reply so far.

I second Ralf's request to keep the existing html interface (i.e. the URLs) intact, if that's doable without too much hassle.

On the other hand, I was told that the whole mail system is being revamped and this would probably include spam filtering the archives.

Will arch -wipe preserve URLs? Because if not, it will be a loss for older messages that refer to them -- we have many of those.

gmane has a nice method of both weeding spam, regularly regenerating article numbers in order (at long intervals) but still also preserving old URLs. I don't know how appropriate this external resource may be for the GNU project, but its features have made me use its links.

Weeding the mboxes is a trivial one-time task; I started that for the libtool lists for a mere private copy already.

What could be done to fix past archives, if maintainers are willing, is to take a copy of the mbox archives, clean them, and send them back. then run arch --wipe on to regenerate the html version.

the mbox archives for public lists are on for private lists, i guess savannah would have to send.

I think it would be a great idea to add this to the FAQ, along with a few notes regarding the default configuration... i.e. that non-member posts are moderated by default.

Has anything changed on this matter? I.e., is it possible in any way to remove spam mails from the list archives?

For the Libtool lists, we have enabled non-member moderation now, and it is working well, but we would like to clean the archives -- some of the earlier months are virtually unreadable because of the very bad noise to signal ratio.

see the GNU Maintainers Guidelines:

You should moderate postings from non-subscribed addresses on your mailing lists, to prevent propagation of unwanted messages (“spam”) to subscribers and to the list archives. For lists controlled by Mailman, you can do this by setting Privacy Options - Sender Filter - generic_nonmember_action to Hold, and then periodically (daily is best) reviewing the held messages, accepting the real ones and discarding the junk.

We currently do not have a way to spam-filter the archives.
Although that is a non-trivial problem, that's something we should investigate.
I think mailing lists are spam-filtered, but it is not possible to catch them all.

Feel free to post suggestions. The Savannah hackers do not have control over the mailing system configuration, although they have on the archives, and can talk with the FSF sysadmins to propose improvements.

Is it possible for a mailing list administrator, to delete (or hide) posts from the archives? We have a list with a lot of spam. We don't want to make it a members only list, but I'd like to remove the spam from the archives.
