Information Visualization
Drexel University
Philadelphia, PA

While pursuing my graduate degree at Drexel University I had the opportunity to spend a term working with Dr. Chaomei Chen. Dr. Chen directed my independent study of Information Visualization techniques. Working with him I applied the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) C++ API to metadata describing the papers published at the IEEE InfoVis Conference over an eight year period. The aim of the research was to discover relationships between the publications and identify seminal articles. This was accomplished by loading the citations into a network data structure and providing an interactive visualization that showed the network growing over time.

Spring, 2005
Natural Language Processing
Drexel University
Philadelphia, PA

Drexel University's College of Information Science and Technology (IST) sponsors many projects focusing on processing medical information. Thanks to the partnership between IST and the Drexel College of Medicine I was able to work with Dr. Hyoil Han of IST on an independent study project across both departments. Dr. Han directed my work on analyzing the metadata and text of journal articles in Oncology. I used Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to help physicians identify articles describing treatments which were statistically significant and which improved conditions for the patients, while filtering articles describing inconclusive experimental results. The project was implemented using Java and the General Architecture for Text Engineering (GATE) from the University of Sheffield.
