The function issymetric worked only on numeric matrices, which is too restrictive, because a non-numeric matrix can be called symmetric if it equals its own transpose, such as ["prose"; "razor"; "ozone"; "sonic"; "erect"]. I've changed the code to include character matrices (patch attached).
