BTW, the setting for the Octave:str-to-num warning is off by default for Octave 3.8. If you want to avoid the warning in earlier versions, disable it with

Also, if you want more Matlab-compatible settings for warnings, start Octave with --traditional.

Exactly what warnings did you get? I haven't seen them (but I haven't used strread.m for quite while)
