I just noticed that this files are actually only the data files distributed with Matlab's image toolbox and not for Matlab core. I will find out the matlab core images in a different patch.

I ahve also sent an email to -email is unavailable- asking for including this image:

For the lifting body image:

I found it here https://www.flickr.com/photos/nasacommons/9460931952/ although the Matlab image is smaller. It would need to be cropped and resized (hopefully a simple filter). If you click on the EXIF button on flickr button, we are redirected to this page https://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/guidelines/index.html#.Ue6Pwj3piSo about usage policy of images. Basically NASA claims no copyright over the images.

I have sent the following email to Susan Cohen from https://www.susancohenpaintings.com/ for permission to include the image "trees"

Dear Susan

I'm a developer for GNU Octave [1], a scientific programming language,
including image processing.  GNU Octave is also free software.  I am
interested in obtaining permission to distribute one of your images
with GNU Octave.

I couldn't find the name of the image in question but is available on
multiple websites on the internet [2, 3, 4], almost always in the
context of a Matlab problem.  The image is distributed with all
versions of Matlab, under the name trees:

%     Cohen.  Used with permission.

GNU Octave is a programming language similar to Matlab and it would be
nice if we could include the same image.

Would your give us similar permission to include the image with GNU
Octave releases?

Best regards,

Carnë

This one is at https://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA01364 and comes with the following policy https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/imagepolicy/

Matlab has a png version of that image but NASA only have a jpeg and tif. I have downloaded the tif from nasa and has exactly the same pixel values as matlab's png version.

Matlab comes with a bunch of data files. These are specially nice for demos, tests, and documentation examples. Octave comes with almost none which means that those need to start with not so obvious code to generate input data. This means they are more difficult to write and also to understand.

I think it would be nice if we could have the same as Matlab, at least part of them.  A subset of them are not copyrighted by Mathworks so we could include at least those in Octave. I will start this thread to discuss including each of them.
