Agreed.
It is possible to get

with quadrigraphs (which seems to be the recommended way) :
+verbatim
--- a/configure.in
+++ b/configure.in
@@ -500,7 +500,7 @@
#--------------------------------------------------------------------

AC_ARG_WITH(sparkle,
-AS_HELP_STRING([--with-sparkle[=ARG]], [with (Win)Sparkle autoupdater [ARG=no]])
+AS_HELP_STRING([--with-sparkle@<:@=ARG@:>@], [with (Win)Sparkle autoupdater [ARG=no]])
)
-verbatim

If you wish, I can change other entries accordingly.
Please let me know.

I noticed that the same problem occurs with the original implementation, so the patch is an improvement after all.
I just applied it. Thanks for your help. --Joris

I have various problems with the patch. For instance, the optional arguments are rendered incorrectly, e.g., it should be --enable-macosx-distr[=ARCH]. The current ugliness is due to this kind of quoting problems, so I will keep the current solution for the moment.

There was a patch in opensuse build service for TeXmacs

which yield standard formatting like

The patch attached has been a little bit extended, for TeXmacs-1.0.7.21,
