A new release both XBoard and WinBoard is now available. Version
4.4.0 includes many changes. It is the first major release of
xboard/winboard after a fork of the project after version 4.2.7. It
includes small changes made in the main line and changes made by a
fork of Alessandro Scotti and lots of changes made afterwards by
H.G. Muller (released as versions 4.3.x). This release represents a
unified version of all changes made after the fork. It includes many new features and bugfixes.
You can get both XBoard and WinBoard from

We are pleased to announce the first beta-release for version 4.4.0 of XBoard/Winboard. This release merges version 4.2.7 with changes from the GNU team, Alessandro Scotti's Winboard_x and H.G. Mullers series of releases of Winboard and XBoard. We invite everyone to try out the new version and send us feedback and bug-reports, so that we can get a very stable final release.
Arun
I uploaded the xboard/winboard source code into git. The repository can be viewed at:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/xboard.git/
It's been a while since a new version of Xboard/Winboard has been officially released. In the meantime a fork of the source code had been created (of 4.2.7) and Alessandro Scotti and H.G. Muller released several new versions of Xboard/Winboard (which they called winboard_x and 4.3.x). At the moment H.G. and myself (H.G. is really doing all the work here) are working on getting those changes back into Savannah which will then lead to a new version: 4.4.0 with tons of new features...
The source code for what will become version 4.4.0 will be up on Savannah shortly at which point beta-testers are welcome ;)
After 4.4.0, work will continue on Xboard/Winboard: There are several new features which we are thinking about and we are also planning on changing to gtk+ to combine xboard and winboard into one application with a unified interface.
Comments and code are welcome.
Watch this space for new updates!
Arun
A new self-installer for WinBoard 4.2.7 is now available at http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/winboard/winboard-4_2_7b.exe. This installer is reported to work on Vista and should also work more smoothly than the old one on other versions of Windows. Thanks to Mark Ioli for putting it together! (And my apologies for not making it available much sooner.)
I occasionally get requests for the Metafont source code of the fselch chess font, from which XBoard's piece bitmaps are made. fselch is a separate GPL'ed work created by Elmar Bartel, but it has no web site, ftp site, or Savannah project of its own, so I've checked a copy into XBoard's CVS repository to make it easier to obtain. See http://savannah.gnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/xboard/fselch/
A new release of both XBoard and WinBoard is now available. Version
4.2.7 corrects about two dozen bugs in the 4.2.6 release. See the
ChangeLog for a list. In addition, WinBoard 4.2.7 comes bundled with
GNU Chess 5.07 instead of the old 5.02+ version. The XBoard and
WinBoard source code trees have been merged, so the xboard download
now contains the complete source for both.
The various larger contributions that people have submitted since the
4.2.6 release are not yet included in 4.2.7. The source code for
these contributions is now available, however (see
http://www.tim-mann.org/extensions.html), and we plan to include most
of them in a future release once the contributors complete necessary
copyright assignment paperwork.
You can get both XBoard and WinBoard from either our new Savannah
project pages or their existing pages on Tim Mann's web site:
- http://www.tim-mann.org/chess.html
Most of the known bugs and deficiencies in previous versions have
not been addressed in this release. It is not necessary to report
your favorite bug again if you have reported it before, unless the
ChangeLog erroneously says it has been fixed. Most known bugs,
deficiencies, and suggestions received are now listed in the ToDo
file. If you find a bug not listed there, please report it in the bug
tracker at https://savannah.gnu.org/projects/xboard/ or by email to
bug-xboard [AT] tim-mann.org.
I've combined the xboard and WinBoard 4.2.6 source distributions and checked them into the project's CVS repository. I've also checked in all the changes that I've made since 4.2.6 came out. This should be very close to what I plan to release as 4.2.7, and I will keep it up to date. So if you'd like to do some xboard/WinBoard development, please start with the version in CVS.
I've started a Savannah project for XBoard/WinBoard. My plan is to copy the sources off my home machine, where they currently live under RCS, into the CVS repository on Savannah. This should enable others to join the project and integrate their own code contributions, instead of having to email them to me and wait forever for me to get around to doing something with them.
If you're interested in contributing to the project, please let me know. Because XBoard is a GNU project with copyright owned by the FSF, you'll need to fill out FSF's standard dead-tree paperwork to contribute your changes.
