A new version of the Source Installer is available!
Version 2.1 fixes serious bugs, and offers new functionality,
like better consistency checks, file conflicts detection bewteen packages, automatic management of entries in the info directory file, and better uninstallation.
The default value for the KEEP_SOURCE preference has been set to false.
There are changes in the command line tool syntax for certain actions, and it is now possible to specify - as a filename to mean standard output.
For a full list of changes, see the ChangeLog files of each package.

Here's some juicy information about the project
that could be interesting for sourceinstall users:
DEVELOPMENT
In sourceinstall-gtk, a new "save log" feature is being implemented, well suited for better bug reports.
It will simply save the output of commands run during build
in a log file.
In libsrcinst, core of the Source Installer, many small issues
have been fixed. Further development in this area will lead to
better (more precise) error reports in the front-ends.
All modules will see a 2.1 release soon.
GNU PACKAGES SUPPORT
A lot of effort is being put in helping current GNU projects better adhere to the GNU installation policies. The goal is to have soon 100% of active GNU Packages supported by sourceinstall.
NON-GNU PACKAGES SUPPORT
As soon as all GNU Packages are supported, attention will move
to non-gnu source packages. Information and support will be offered even to non-gnu projects to move to the autotools, or at least to the GNU common installation policies.
DOCUMENTATION
Help is needed here. Unfortunately, with all which is going on on the development-side, little time has been dedicated to build strong documentation. Both a texinfo manual and manpages are needed, for all three modules. In addition, an online overview in html format would also be important.
To help, see:
http://savannah.gnu.org/people/?group=sourceinstall
X.Org (X11) SUPPORT
I am happy to announce that X.Org and its direct library dependencies are moving to GNU installation policies, and will be installable using sourceinstall.
I am happy to announce the availability of GNU Source Installer 2.0 (libsrcinst-2.0, sourceinstall-2.0, sourceinstall-gtk-2.0).
Downloads are available on ftp.gnu.org:
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall/libsrcinst-2.0.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall/sourceinstall-2.0.tar.gz
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall/sourceinstall-gtk-2.0.tar.gz
Install in this order.
This is mainly a bug fix release.
A lot of problems have been found and fixed in the last test release. User-visible changes from 2.0-rc2 are close to none, but note that the default installation prefix for users has been changed to ~/usr (in order to try to reduce confusion). Default prefix for user root remains /usr/local.
GNU Source Installer is a complete source package management tool, useful for both developers and regular users.
It builds on top of GNU installation policies to provide package validation, installation, tracking, checking, upgrade and uninstallation in a Unix-portable way.
The project needs help, in at least 4 areas.

This is to announce the availability, on
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall
of the second test release of the new Source Installer 2 .
It contains a lot of fixes, and a new powerful upgrade action, to cleanly manage source package upgrades.
To try it, build and install libsrcinst-2.0-rc2.tar.gz first,
then choose the command line client or the gtk front end.
sourceinstall-2.0-rc2.tar.gz is the command line front end,
sourceinstall-gtk-2.0-rc2.tar.gz is the GTK front end.
This is to announce the availability, on
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/sourceinstall
of a first test release of the new Source Installer 2 .
If you have some spirit of adventure, you might want to try it.
It could even compile, and on my system it happens to run.
Yes, this is meant to scare you, since this is VERY alpha code.
libsrcinst-2.0-rc1 is the source installer 2 library, and
must be installed first.
sourceinstall-2.0-rc1 is a command line front end, which requires libsrcinst.
sourceinstall-gtk-2.0-rc1 is a GTK 2 front-end, which requires libsrcinst, and currently requires GTK 2.6, which is fairly new. This last requirement might be relaxed to older versions if I receive requests in this sense.
Good luck, and report your findings if you do try it.
Claudio
Work on the GTK frontend for the libsrcinst library,
as part of the new sourceinstall2 architecture,
has been finally started.
The position as GTK interface developer for the project remains open, so if you can write decent user interfaces in GTK,
you can contribute (ideas | interface mockups | code)
and be added to the project (in that order).
The code is going to be put in CVS Really Soon Now (TM), check out module sourceinstall2 (see CVS help in savannah).
I am happy to announce the release of GNU Source Installer version 0.5 .
With this release, sourceinstall moves towards the goal of being a complete source package installer and management tool.
The main improvements from the 0.4 version include a new completely scriptable command line interface. See the manual for a detailed explanation of the invocation syntax, with all actions, options and preferences.
This version also supports more packages by detecting the old INSTALL_ROOT makefile feature as an alias to the autoconf-generated DESTDIR.
It adds a new 'Clean' phase to the process (which occurs when reconfiguring a package for (re)installation). This way configure options are always reflected in the actual installation.
This version also adds package information export functionalities: information can be exported to XML, plaintext and plaintext file list.
DTD for the XML is reachable at
http://www.gnu.org/software/sourceinstall/package_set.dtd
The GUI has also been improved, where some missing accelerators have been finally implemented, the popup menu for the package list has been made sticky, the add dialog has been improved and more.
There is also a very experimental, slow, and maybe pointless binary tarball export function. The exported binaries are simply tarballs containing the relevant files with their owners and permissions.
The release also includes a lot of bug fixes.
For downloads, documentation, information, and basically everything, look at the project home page:
http://www.gnu.org/software/sourceinstall/sourceinstall.html
Thanks to all people that submitted bug reports.
However, please send or CC: your reports to bug-sourceinstall@gnu.org, so more people can get help out of your report, and I can avoid working in parallel for people showing the same problem.
For detailed instructions on how to properly report bugs, please read the sourceinstall manual.
Hello,
I wanted to inform you before leaving Italy about the things I am doing for sourceinstall at the moment, and give a (vague) idea of probable future changes.
In CVS I am of course fixing small bugs and restructuring code, but I am also experimenting and playing with these new functionalities for the next version (from pointless to more important)
You can expect(1) these things to stabilize into the 0.5 release in some time.
For the next cycle and beyond I am considering more things. Here's a couple, these are ideas that could get implemented so, or in a different way, or not, there's nothing definitive yet.

This release of GNU Source Installer includes fixes for some serious bugs, and juicy new features.
Configure scripts generated with autoconf <= 2.13 now see their configure options properly recognized.
Keyboard navigation has been made easier. Shortcuts for the main actions have been implemented (look at the underlined chars). Also experiment with TAB, arrows, PGUP, PGDOWN, and SPACE or ENTER to select things.
sourceinstall own configure script is now able to detect a wider range of problems, and now reports package versions.
Interpreter detection can be left to ./configure (first attempt is tclsh, second choice is expectk), or it can be overridden using the --with-tclsh[=NAME] or --with-expectk[=NAME] options.

This version requires tcl and tk, and has a lot of bugfixes and new features: a status bar showing currently executing command, in addition to the entry in the pseudoconsole, and current progress.
Per-user lock has been implemented, and the documentation has been enriched.
Give it a shot :)
