The next GNU Hackers' Meeting will take place in İzmir, Turkey, in October 2022. Please see the event web page at https://gnu.org/ghm/2022 .
Due to a problem in the alias configuration, mails sent to ghm-planning before Sun Apr 14 8:00 CEST have been silently dropped.
If you sent a registration email and/or a talk proposal for the GHM 2019, please resend it.
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Twelve years after it's first edition in Orense, the GHM is back to Spain! This time, we will be gathering in the nice city of Madrid for hacking, learning and meeting each other.
The event will have place from Wednesday 4 September to Friday 6
September, 2019.
Please visit http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2019 for more information on the venue and instructions on how to register and propose talks.
The website will be updated as we complete the schedule and the organizational details, so stay tuned!
At last, the GHM 2017 video recordings are now online, along with presentation slides and abstracts.
Enjoy: http://audio-video.gnu.org/video/ghm2017/
Before the memory of the recent GHM fades out and we get back to working on our own projects I wish to thank one last time the organizers John Darrington and Alex Sassmannshausen, Christopher Dimech for shooting and editing on the videos, and all the speakers and participants. Looking forward to seeing you again next year.
Registration for the GNU Hackers Meeting 2017 is now open.
The GNU Hackers Meeting is an event spanning 3 days and is open to everyone interested in the GNU operating system.
In 2017, it takes place in the Knüllwald region of Germany. This year it is a "residential" event; meaning that your registration includes food and accommodation. Places are limited so early registration is advised.
More information can be found at http://www.gnu.org/s/ghm
About the GNU Hackers Meeting:
The GNU Hackers Meeting is an annual, semi-formal gathering of programmers, advocates, users and everyone interested in GNU. The program comprises informal talks, seminars, workshops and discussion sessions. Social interaction is also a purpose of the event. Previous meetings have been held in Rennes, Paris, Bristol and Düsseldorf.
About GNU:
GNU was launched in 1983, as an operating system which would be put together by people working together for the freedom of all software users to control their computing.
The primary and continuing goal of GNU is to offer a Unix-compatible system that would be 100% free software. The name of the system, GNU, is a recursive acronym meaning "GNU's Not Unix". Technically, GNU is similar to Unix. But unlike Unix, GNU gives its users freedom.

The programme for the 8th GNU Hackers' Meeting has now been finalised and is online at http://gnu.org/ghm/upcoming.html
All are welcome and attendance at GHM is free of charge, but you must register at http://gnu.org/ghm/register.html - please do so as soon as possible if you wish to take part.
The event is hosted by the Technische Universität in Munich, Germany.
The talks will be recorded and made available online shortly after the meeting.
There is still time to register for the eighth GNU Hackers' Meeting, which will take place from August 15 to August 17 2014 in Munich, Germany.
The GNU Hackers' Meetings are an organized, yet friendly and informal opportunity to discuss technical, social and organizational issues concerning the GNU project.
The meeting is open to existing and prospective GNU developers, and anyone who has an interest using, promoting or otherwise helping out with the GNU system.
GNU developers, users and other interested parties are invited to address the meeting.
In the past, the audience has been technically competent, and very technical topics are usually well received. However, topics of a non-technical nature are also very welcome.
As well as talks about social, ethical and administrative issues concerning GNU, presentations about new features to existing GNU software and proposed new GNU packages are on topic.
Members of the GNU evaluation team will be present, so if you have a project which you are considering contributing to GNU, this would be a great opportunity to present it and get feedback.
Social interaction with other GNU Hackers is of course part of the deal!
Registration is necessary but free of charge. There will be the opportunity to make a donation to the cost of future meetings.
For further information and details of the registration procedure, see http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2014/munich/.
We are happy to announce the eighth GNU Hackers' Meeting, which will take place from August 15 to August 17 2014 in Munich, Germany.
The GNU Hackers' Meetings are an organized, yet friendly and informal opportunity to discuss technical, social and organizational issues concerning GNU and free software in general.
We have set up an official meeting page containing practical information at http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2014/munich
As we are still in the process of defining the program, we welcome your talk proposals. We are particularly interested in new GNU programs and recent developments in existing packages, as well as any GNU related topic. In the past, the audience has been technically competent, and very technical topics are usually well received. However, topics of a non-technical nature are also very welcome.
GNU developers, users and other interested parties are invited to address the meeting. This year, presentations will fall into two categories: Short Talks, and Full Presentations. Short talks will be allocated 30 minutes including time for questions (if any). The longer presentations will be 1 hour including question time. We will try to schedule similar talks together in the same morning or afternoon session.
Registration is necessary but free of charge. There will be the opportunity to make a donation to the cost of future meetings.
The FSF has kindly set up a small fund to help finance (documented) travel expenses for GNU maintainers and contributors, past and present. In case you qualify and you need financial assistance to attend, please mention this fact in your registration e-mail, along with all the relevant details including the minimum amount that would permit you to attend the event, no later than June 13 2014.
You are welcome to join the public mailing list ghm-discuss@gnu.org (https://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/ghm-discuss). Talk proposals and registration e-mails should also be directed to ghm-reg@gnu.org
Hello. I'm trying to help the April and Université Paris 8 people who are working to set up the French event celebrating GNU's thirtieth anniversary, on Saturday September 21. Here's the English version of the announcement:
http://www.april.org/en/celebrating-30-years-gnu-paris-8-university-september-21-2013
If you plan to come, and particularly if you would like to help, you can subscribe to the organization mailing list here:
http://listes.april.org/wws/info/gnu30parisorg
(you can use English or French on the list, as you prefer)
The event is open to the general public but of course we particularly welcome GNU hackers from France, nearby countries, or anywhere. No formal guarantees, but it's likely that some informal accommodation for the night will be found for GNU hackers, should someone need it.
Please tell us at what time you're coming, if possible; in particular it would be nice to have as many GNU people as possible available in the morning, when students will be present.
People with first-hand experience told me that they are very serious at teaching programming and technical stuff at Université Paris 8, right from the first year. Students should be a competent and interested audience, and I'm eager to meet them.
If you have concrete suggestions about some activity for this informal GNU get-together/workshop you're welcome to write. Keep into account that the morning public will be more technically-oriented than the average person coming in the afternoon for Richard's speech. Richard will deliver a special talk for the occasion, in French.
During the morning and/or in the afternoon, there will also be a
«coding-goûter» session -- an introduction to programming for children and their parents using a visual tool, of course free software, which I also look forward to.
Celebrations will extend into the afternoon and evening, along with opportunities to hack.
Hoping to see you soon.
The 2013 edition of the GNU Hackers Meeting is now over.
It was a successful edition and the second largest to date, with 48 registered participants and 17 talks. I wish to thank everybody for making this GHM as interesting and fun as it was.
After a week of rest I've finally finished cleaning up the web page, and published our video recording of the talks.
Enjoy: http://www.gnu.org/ghm/2013/paris/
