Note that a new maintainer, Kjharcombe, has recently been put in place. We are hoping to be able to continue development with this package.
Here's a new release of GNU FreeDink :)
https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freedink/freedink-109.6.tar.gz
https://www.gnu.org/software/freedink/
https://play.freedink.org/
This is the first official announcement for the new 109.x line with updated technologies (SDL2, OpenGL), WebAssembly support and many fixes and improvements.
About GNU FreeDink:
Dink Smallwood is an adventure/role-playing game, similar to classic Zelda, made by RTsoft. Besides twisted humor, it includes the actual game editor, allowing players to create hundreds of new adventures called Dink Modules or D-Mods for short.
GNU FreeDink is a new and portable version of the game engine, which runs the original game as well as its D-Mods, with close compatibility, under multiple platforms.
Here's a new release of freedink-data :)
https://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freedink/freedink-data-1.08.20190120.tar.gz
It adds 4 new sounds replacements, 1 update sound, 1 new translation and 2 updated translations.

Here's a new release of DFArc, a frontend to run the GNU FreeDink game and manage its numerous add-on adventures or D-Mods :)
https://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/freedink/dfarc-3.14.tar.gz
This release fixes CVE-2018-0496: Sylvain Beucler and Dan Walma discovered several directory traversal issues in DFArc (as well as in the RTsoft's Dink Smallwood HD / ProtonSDK version), allowing an attacker to overwrite arbitrary files on the user's system.
Also in this release:
- New Swedish and Friulian translations.
- Updated Catalan, Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish translations.
- Fix crash when clicking on 'Package' when there is no D-Mod present.
- Compilation fixes for OS X.
- Reproducible build process for Windows (as well as GNU/Linux depending on your distro) - see https://reproducible-builds.org/
A note about distros security support:
- Debian Security team graciously issued a CVE ID under 72h but declined both a security upload and a rationale on their choice; fix diverted to the next ~quarterly point release
- Fedora/RedHat security did not answer after 6 days; fortunately Fedora is flexible enough to allow package maintainers to upgrade DFArc in previous releases on their own
- Gentoo Security did not answer after 7 days
- FreeBSD ports and Mageia packagers were contacted but did not answer
- In Arch, package still stuck between orphaned and deleted state due to a 2017 bug
It seems security support for packages without large user base and/or games is delayed significantly at best.

Here's a new bugfix release of the GNU FreeDink game :)
http://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/freedink/freedink-108.4.tar.gz
- Never recreate an empty hard.dat in the game, even if there's a problem opening it (avoids corruption when running both the game and an editor at the same time).
(thanks CocoMonkey for the report)
- DinkC: load_palette() now searches for palette in the right place
(thanks scratcher for the report)
- DinkC: Dink position is updated after a new screen is loaded
(thanks metatarasal for the report)
- New translations for the engine strings in Russian (thanks Yuri Kozlov) and Hungarian (thanks Balázs Úr).

- Improve extract & package performance.
- Fix infrequent off-by-1-pixel bug in logo animation.
- New Serbian, Catalan, Turkish, Esperanto, Brazilian Portuguese and Hungarian translations, as well as translations updates.
- Upgrade to wxWidgets 3.0.

Luiji started a new design to the website!
Please tell us what you think :)
Late announcement : a solid month ago FreeDink and DFArc got a new release with bugfixes and new translations. Enjoy :)
Ofir (in July) and Joshua (this month) contributed 5 new sounds, to replace the non-free music from the original Dink game. And 4 of them are original, completely new songs - make exclusively for GNU FreeDink!!!
The latest version of the freedink-data packages ships with the new music :)
- 7.mid: Darklands (Joshua O'Leary)
- 12.mid: inside GoodHearth castle (Joshua O'Leary)
- 18.mid: End Boss (Joshua O'Leary)
- 5.ogg: Tavern/bar in Terris (Ofir Mo)
- 13.ogg: Church (Johann Pachelbel's Canon, MIDI by Ofir Mo)
The GNU FreeDink game engine is updated to v1.08.20101114: this fixes a couple crashes in recent D-Mods, and adds the new Turbo mode that triples the game speed when pressing Tab (e.g. to speed up lengthy cut-scenes).
DFArc v3.8.1 is a stable-branch update that mainly adds a new Dutch translation that I had forgotten to include in v3.8.
Cheers!
As you may have seen, some developers of VLC, a multimedia player recently ported to iPhone/iPad, plan to enforce the GNU General Public License on the AppStore:
http://www.fsf.org/blogs/licensing/vlc-enforcement
AppStore has Terms of Service incompatible with the GNU GPL, and so far they removed GPL Apps rather than fix their TOS.
There's been a few negative reactions towards those developers, out of disappointment that VLC may be pulled out of AppStore.
I want to stress this: the issue is that Apple has bad Terms of Service for the AppStore. The fact it's a big company doesn't change it: it's their mistake, and they need to fix it. Don't blame on VLC developers if Apple doesn't make a move.
It's worth noting that, due to technical restrictions (Tivoization), AppStore is the only place where iPhone/iPad users can install software from. Let's also remind us that Apple keeps 30% on all AppStore sales.
( More info at http://www.freedink.org/get#iphone )
GNU FreeDink, the free, portable and enhanced version of the Dink Smallwood game engine which I maintain, faces the same issue and cannot be ported to iPhone/iPad for that reason.
The Free Software Foundation runs a campaign against those locked-in devices. If you own one, tell your disappointment to Apple now:

DFArc is the front-end for GNU FreeDink, the
free, portable and enhanced version of the Dink Smallwood game engine. It allows users to play and manage game extensions.
http://www.freedink.org/screenshots/dfarc3.png
- Logo animation when selecting a D-Mod.
- Language selection: set DFArc's language in the Options (so you
don't have to modify your system language to test a translation).
- Language selection: when translations are available for a D-Mod,
allow the user to choose one in a listbox.
- Updated Danish, Finnish, Italian and Polish translations.
- Developper buttons are shown by default - we can't let users miss
that they can makes their own games!
- If Dink crashes, don't (mistakenly) report that it was not found,
but (correctly) report that it failed.
- Enable editor warning again, it previously stopped working because
of a bug.
Now RMS can play GNU FreeDink too :)

This is Debian 6.0 "Squeeze" and its vanilla 'freedink' package.
The past 3 months have been busy - except in public communication! Here's a summary of the improvements in GNU FreeDink, the free, portable and enhanced version of the Dink Smallwood game engine:
- New FreeDink v1.08.20100321 (game engine) with a couple bugfixes and 9 new translations
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freedink/freedink-1.08.20100321.tar.gz
- New DFArc v3.6 (game front-end) with 5 new translations
http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/freedink/dfarc-3.6.tar.gz
- New freedink-data v1.08.20100103 (free game data) with 3 new translations, 1 new sound effect and a sample D-Mod (add-on) to test free sound replacements.

If you have an iPhone, you'll probably be interested in taking action so as to free that severely locked platform:

Enjoy :)
I released new versions of GNU FreeDink and DFArc.
FreeDink experienced a decent number of clean-ups over the past few months, as shown in the previous news, and it was high time to actually publish :)
The complete list of changes can be found at:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freedink.git/tree/NEWS?id=v1.08.20090918
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freedink/dfarc.git/tree/NEWS?id=v3.4
Thanks to the motivating people at the Dink forum and excellent software from ps2dev.org, I ported FreeDink on playstation portable :)
Here's a picture:
http://www.freedink.org/doc/psp/psp-freedink.jpg
See instructions here:
http://www.dinknetwork.com/forum.cgi?MID=98085
However, the PSP platform suffers from Tivoization; you need to unlock it through a workaround to run 3rd-party applications. This is only possible with PSP 1 and 2 (not with v3). Here's how:
http://www.freedink.org/doc/psp/
In case you're interested in programming on PSP too, here are setup instructions followed by less informal considerations on the platform:
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/freedink.git/tree/doc/psp.txt
NSIS (Nullsoft Scriptable Install System - http://nsis.sourceforge.net/) is pretty interesting: you can generate a complete .exe installer using a simple script language (so it's unattended), and there's even a Debian GNU/Linux package so you don't even need to have woe (and so you can generate the installer from the freedink.org autobuilder) :)
Plus it works fine with Wine.
The first version is here, it installs the FreeDink engine, the DFArc front-end, and freedink-data:
http://www.freedink.org/snapshots/woe/freedink-all-installer.exe
Graphics will probably be improved :)
Complete Unix/GCC support is pretty new, so you need version >= 2.42 (in Experimental for Debian).
