GNU acct 6.6.2 has been released!
This is a bug-fix and compatibility update only, in the awaiting for a rewritten suite adopting utmpx.
After some issues the new release has been uploaded to ftp.gnu.org. NB: This release is GPL v3.
After many years of unmaintained code and code collecting dust, I'm a happy manager to release a new version of 'acct'.
Markus Gothe, New Maintainer
As the new maintainer I've changed the license from now to GPLv3 (or at your option later).
GNU acct 6.4 will feature Linux multiformat support, an up-to-date build system, and some small bug fixes.
I've prepared a prerelease that you can download from http://www.physik3.uni-rostock.de/tim/kernel/utils/acct/acct-6.4-pre1.tar.gz . Please test it!
If you find a bug, please file a bug report in the bugs section here on Savannah. If you don't, I'd appreciate an email to tim@physik3.uni-rostock.de so that I can better estimate the amount of testing this prerelease has gotten.
Unfortunately, I will probably not be able to respond to any inquiries in January or February. But if all goes well, we will see GNU acct 6.4 in March.
OK, it seems like I cannot hold my original promise to work on a release in the near future. So I just decided to submit my patchset to the patch manager on savannah. It is what forms my version 6.3.5-ts02-11 with Linux multiformat support.
The current patchset can also be found at <http://www.physik3.uni-rostock.de/tim/kernel/utils/acct/>.
On the 17th, I'll be giving a talk "Software Patents in Europe: TODO", in Aston University in Birmingham (England). Research for this talk is monopolising my time but I think it's well worth it.
To tide people over, I've imported the code files into Savannah's CVS repository. The build system is still missing, I'll get this up next week.
Add a comment to this forum if you have any comments. I haven't tested the accounting utils under Linux 2.5 yet, Alan Cox made a reference to some changes to the process accounting (32bit uids), I'll take a proper look at this when I get a chance.

Original plan was a simple clean up operation and a quick release. This has turned into extensive clean ups (recoding parts) and will produce a longer release process.
My source tree usually isn't buildable by the usual "./configure && make" so it's not much good to others... but I should be releasing the code when I can. To bridge the two, I'm going to put a mildly cleaned version of 6.3.5 into CVS, so it's there for package maintainers to make patches against etc. In the mean time, I'll still be working on my local copy which won't be releasable for a while.
I'm off to Brussels in a few hours to join a protest against software patents in europe, I'll be back on sunday the 11th. I'll import the code into CVS on monday the 12th, and plan to release 6.3.6 on the 22nd (may 2003).
Add comments to this forum if you have any, or email me.

Hello all who like to keep track of users.
The new codebase for the GNU Accounting Utils will soon be in CVS. The final delay is due to one last clean review of the build system.
User noticeable changes in 6.4-pre1:
(none)
Hacker noticeable changes in 6.4-pre1:
Most of the code is the same, just cleaner. All of the build system is new. I plan to keep testing and tweaking this codebase for a little while longer. A small number of new features will be added but maintaining stability will be the main goal. When I'm happy that no new bugs have appeared (and the few old ones are still gone), I'll brand it 7.0 and start trying to get distributions to integrate it.
Post-7.0 is when the real new features get added. Post your suggestions to this forum.
