Prepare to update your license notices!

Item posted by Sylvain Beucler <Beuc> on Mon 25 Apr 2005 06:08:00 PM UTC.

Because of the new address, the FSF is releasing a new version of the GPL - it's not version 3 yet, it's actually the third revision of version 2. Like the previous revision, it will differ only in that it will contain FSF's new address. This version will be available and effective on Friday, April 29, 2005.

When you next get the chance, please go through your source code and replace the old copy of the GPL with the new version.

Also, old notices should be replaced with new ones. The following shell command will help you do this in a sloppy way. Its results should be carefully checked - it will not work, among others, if the address spans multiple lines:

find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 sed -i -e 's/59 Temple Place - Suite 330/51 Franklin Street, Fifth Floor/;s/02111-1307/02110-1301/;'

The FSF will also be releasing new revisions of the LGPL and the FDL.

The GPL HOWTO will then provide updated information:

you should update your file etc/site-specific-content/page_footer.txt to reflect the current year and the new address of the FSF.

Do not confuse the notices :) (posted by Sylvain Beucler, Sat 30 Apr 2005 06:21:24 PM UTC)

The GNU GPL should indeed not be modified when you distribute it in your application.

Most likely, the date you are refering to are the copyright notices dates (check Those are specific to each project, and not specific to the GNU GPL.

copying (posted by Mark Roth, Fri 29 Apr 2005 12:08:52 PM UTC)

since this file is distribute verbatim I guess we just have to wait for this to change...

So we wait for this to change??? (posted by Mark Roth, Fri 29 Apr 2005 12:06:33 PM UTC)

Since this file can be distributed verbatim but not changed I guess we just have to wait...

y2k - lets update the year number? (posted by John Doe, Tue 26 Apr 2005 10:11:02 AM UTC)

Right now, it says "19xx" .. shouldn't that be changed
to "20xx", now we're at it?

I guess the date has already been changed in the GPL appearing in the Linux kernel tree, lets update the official version also!

Nospam .
