Server exhausted, mldonkey clients charged
Item posted by Mathieu Roy <yeupou> on Fri Mar 7 10:27:33 2003.
The Savannah server is currently exhausted because hundred of mldonkey clients are trying to download differents files as servers-list or motd (server.met, motd.html, motd.conf, peers.ocl).
Despite the fact that we now fordib access to this kind of data, it still creates tons of http connections and generates lot of CPU usage.
Please keep in mind that Savannah is a free software
<b>development</b> tool, not a part of a p2p network. Offering data to
be downloaded which is neither documentation or software is unacceptable
here.
If you use a software like mldonkey, please configure it to stop looking for these files here - or shut it down if it's not configurable.
If you are member of a project creating such troubles (mldonkey frontend or whatever), please remove this "feature".
If you notice similar "feature" in an another software hosted on Savannah, please tell us at savannah-hackers@gnu.org

Just to discuss the question. Would it be okay if I make my software check for new versions at savannah, say once a day?
Where's the limit, what about on each startup? or once each hour?
What are your policy for this?
Note: I don't have any project doing this, just asking. |

Please, update your mldonkey copy.

I already got 2.03 (which was rushed out specifically for this problem) the first day ... but checking out of CVS seems to be difficult recently (at least my cvs updates constantly fail with 'cvs [update aborted]: end of file from server (consult above messages if any)'). |

Hi,
Same problem here. I constantly get:
'cvs [update aborted]: end of file from server

One of the service that suffer most of the mldonkey whole issue is the anonymous cvs access.
Please, retry later or get the official release. |

Just a question: Why did this suddently become so bad? mldonkey has been doing these d/ls all the time and I've never experienced any problems with cvs on savannah before... is the system taking more resources to deny access than to deliver the files as it previously did?
Just wondering why all of a sudden stuff seems to break where it actually should be working better (many users have already switched to the latest mldonkey, including me, so those shouldn't pose a problem to savannah any more). |

In fact, we weren't aware of that mldonkey was doing these dl.
We noticed a load increase but we thought that was pretty normal according to the growing number of project hosted.
It became so bad surely because of the growing popularity of mldonkey and others softwares based on mldonkey.
The system take obviously less ressources to deny access than to serve files. But after a week of running at a "50" load average, it's expectable to see major failures in the whole service. And going back to a normal situation requires unusual procedures - as stopping services that consume the most of the serveur ressources. The server has been even rebooted.
Now, it's pretty ok.

Hmm... yeah, the problem will be to get rid of all those old clients because AFAIK the devels have no means to influence those. Guess we'll have to hope that they sometimes read the news and update ASAP. |

Now they get a 403 which is harmless. This issue became horrible because of the cvs pserver issue we posted a news about later.
Now both issues are over :) |

You need to get:
The first steps have been taken (the news item was mentioned on the mldonkey-users list) but that's probably not enough.
For mldonkey users reading this here's the settings to change in your downloads.ini:
network_update_url = "http://savannah.nongnu.org/download/mldonkey/network/"
web_infos = [
Just change the savannah.nongnu.org to something like 'localhost' ... downloading these files won't work then but it currently doesn't work anyway and at least it takes the load off the server here.
(I'll also post the above to the mailing list... but as for the devels, not much I can do apart from making a request) |

It's an idea but it cannot fix this issue, as we are far away for a normal situation.
For instance, for today (day not finished), we got 102916 request for mldonkey files.

Is there any way the mldonkey init file can be reconfigured to crash the client? That would force users to upgrade.

Just an idea: mldonkey wants to download a motd from there which is displayed on startup and in the clients. Just place a message there, which is (hopefully) seen by users of the older releases... |
