Vol 55(9-B), Mar 1995, pp. 4081 IS: ISSN 0419-4217 (Print) PB: Publisher US: Univ Microfilms International AB: Abstract This focus of this research was to develop and evaluate several types of interaction techniques using a MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) keyboard as input device for human computer interaction. The MIDI keyboard controller as well as several traditional input devices were programmed to interactively edit and manipulate both bioptic and stereoscopic computer generated displays. Several human factors studies were designed and run to investigate the use of a MIDI keyboard, foot peddles, pitch wheels, data sliders, the computer mouse, and six dimensional trackers combined with various keystroke level mappings for enabling subjects to perform editing and control tasks within the virtual environment. The editing tasks included translating and rotating objects viewed stereoscopically in three dimensions as well as continuously tracking a moving object along one dimension. The results of the studies indicated that performance was enhanced when using a MIDI continuous controller such as the modulation wheel for absolute positioning tasks as compared to more traditional input devices such as the computer mouse. However, for manual tracking tasks, it was found that performance when using the computer mouse or MIDI key position was better than performance when using MIDI continuous controllers. The implications of the results for the design of input devices within the domain of human-computer interaction and virtual environments are discussed.
