59
1.3 Emulating Oxyd

60
61
Enigma started out in an attempt to revive the game idea behind the
62 Oxyd games published by Dongleware. The series consisted of four
63 games: Oxyd 1, Per.Oxyd, Oxyd magnum and Oxyd extra. Oxyd 1 and
64 Per.Oxyd were quite successful back when Ataris were cool, and the PC
65 and MAC conversions also garnered a sizeable fan community. But,
66 calling for a modest amount of intelligence, they obviously never
67 appealed to the masses, and in 2002 Dongleware decided to withdraw
68 from the gaming business and consequently to abandon Oxyd.

69
70
Now, more than one year later, Enigma is finally capable of
71 emulating much of Oxyd's core functionality. The gaming experience
72 unfortunately isn't yet perfect: Enigma does not have some of the game
73 objects and important features like network support are utterly
74 missing. Importing Oxyd's sound effects and does work however,
75 as does importing some of the original levels. What we may never
76 achieve to copy, however, is Oxyd's overall feel: objects will always
77 move differently, accelerate differently, act a little differently.
78 Do not expect a perfect Oxyd clone any time soon.

79
80
Enigma will automatically import all Oxyd data files it can find.
81 All you have to do is copy at least one of the following files to
82 Enigma's data directory:

83
84

85

Per.Oxyd

peroxyd.dat

86

Oxyd 1

oxyd1ibm.dat

87

Oxyd extra

oxydex.dat

88

Oxyd magnum

oxydmibm.dat

89

Oxyd magnum gold

oxydmgg.dat

90

91
92
Now, where is Enigma's data directory? That depends:

93
94

95 Windows: There's a data folder in Enigma's
96 installation directory, the location of which you can specify in
97 the installation program. Usually
98 C:\Program Files\Enigma\data or something similar
99 should work.
100

101
102

103 Unix: There are two alternatives: First, if you are root,
104 you can copy the
105 .dat file to /usr/local/share/enigma or
106 /usr/share/games/enigma or wherever you (or your package
107 manager) put Enigma's data files. Note that there is no
108 directory called
109 data on Unix. Second, you can make a create a
110 .enigma directory in your home dir and put Oxyd's files
111 there.
