36
To prove that Adonthell is far from being abandoned, here is another incarnation of the v0.3 branch. Its most significant feature are Dutch and Italian translations of Waste's Edge. Thanks to Julie and Paolo for their great work! Together with the translation comes support for true type fonts (although you can still revert to the old bitmap font in case nostalgia befalls you.)
37

38
Work on the v0.4 branch will continue too, but without your help, it's not going to be finished anytime soon. So if you are a programmer, artist or writer willing to work with nice people to make Adonthell a truly great open source role playing game, you'll be welcomed with open arms. For more details, read the introduction for new developers. Or head straight to documentation and task list.

39
Now go ahead and download the thing! So far, the source code and a MacOS X binary are available, more platforms will follow ...

42
No, we're still not dead. In fact, development has even gained some momentum again over the last months, but without your help it might not lead anywhere soon. As a first step towards getting that help, our documentation has been vastly improved: there's finally a recent API doc describing the v0.4 engine, an all new Engine Architecture Guide and more ... - and a TODO list is on its way.

43 So if you are developer, artist or writer, join our efforts and help getting the next release ready before 2010!

47
As of now, all the downloads are back online.

However, some parts of the website are not totally restored yet. They should work again soon.

51
As you may have noticed, most downloads are currently unavailable. They have been taken down after GNU Savannah had been hacked. Part of Savannah's service has been restored in the meantime. We have audited our CVS tree to make sure that no malicious code has crept in. So at present you can get Adonthell directly through CVS. The Debian packages which weren't hosted at Savannah are also still available. All the rest should be back online in January 2004, when the Savannah team reopens their ftp server.

Sorry for the temporary inconvenience.

55
Two new pieces by Andrew Phillips have been added to the library, preparing the stage for the next demo. Regarding the Magick Riot of Erinsford is the brief history of human settlement in the Waste's Edge area, inspired by recent events. More of the Riot can be learned in Fountain Falling, a song made in remembrance of the victims.

As with all writing, the two pieces are not essential for playing the demo (which is still in an very early state, btw.), but it will help to get a better understanding of certain aspects of the story.

The whole library is also available in PDF format for offline reading or printing.

59
One outstanding part of Dun Barethsol, the 0.4 demo game, will be its plot. While Waste's Edge contained only few references to the world the story is set in, Dun Barethsol will have a much richer and more detailed background. This gives us the chance to add several threads to the main plot for players to pursue and resolve if they wish to. In doing so, much can be learned of the different groups and factions that inhabit this part of the world and also of its recent history.

Apart from those more recent events, there is yet another layer shimmering through at times: the distant past, when the world was young and full of magic and wonder. Many remnants of this age are hidden to the unwary eye, dismissed as folklore or fairy tales, but they are nevertheless there.

All that background will not only give more authenticity to the game, it is also closely woven together with Marcella, the main character, allowing for a great deal of character development. Will she follow her own will, or accept her destiny? Will she turn to light or to shadow? The decision is yours ...

61
Finally: Waste's Edge for MacOS X - Tuesday Nov 25 13:54 2003 - Kai Sterker
62
63
After being ported ages ago, there is finally a binary of Adonthell - Waste's Edge available for MacOS X. So if you didn't compile it yourself already, go ahead and download the pre-made package that'll run out of the box under Aqua.

On a similar line, Dave Whitinger built a binary for Red Hat 7.3 that is finally available together with the other RPM packages.

And last but not least, rumours have it, that Waste's Edge might even come to MorphOS ... finally ;-)

65
The long awaited news update - Tuesday Nov 25 13:43 2003 - Kai Sterker
66
67
Apologies for the long silence. Various causes are responsible for the lack of news, like being much more occupied with job, study or private live these days. So the development (which hasn't always been the fastest in the past) will be slower in the future. However, it hasn't stopped!

The foundations of the v0.4 engine are coming together, this time with cross-platform compatibility built right in. Artwork and plot are also evolving, so the result will look much nicer and will have more depth than Waste's Edge. More gameplay too. So we certainly hope that it will be worth the wait!

And while you are waiting, why not have a look at Sigil: a traditional pen & paper RPG played over the internet.

69
CVS changed - Saturday Jul 19 09:50 2003 - Kai Sterker
70
71
At long last we have switched CVS to the v0.4 development branch. That means, if you checkout the adonthell module, you will get the code for version 0.4 of the Adonthell engine. To get the up-to-date code of the previous release (v0.3), get the adonthell-0.3 module instead.

Be warned however: 0.4 code is in a very early stage, so there is little to see yet. Once we have something interesting working, you'll read about it here. So stay tuned.

73
Adonthell 0.4 news (#4) - Saturday May 3 17:51 2003 - Kai Sterker
74
75
As an actual release is still far way, all we can do is shed some light on what will be coming eventually. This time we'll have a look at items.

Apart from the ordinary armour and weapons, jewellery and potions that mustn't miss in any fantasy role-playing game, there will be other items too. A lot of them will have no use of their own, but the right combination, tool and skill may help turning them into something very useful. Even seemingly complete items can often be further refined, be it temporarily or permanently.

Adventurers can thus gain nearly as much additional strength and power by enhancing their equipment, as they will gain by advancement in level. And should one's skills be not enough for further improvement, worry not: loremasters and artisans are ever ready to lend a hand ... for a price.

And perhaps you will even be able to bake your own bread :).
