What does
grub-fstest /dev/sdaN ls -- -l /boot/grub/i386-pc
say? Looking at code I see one case when it may fail: dirent split across bnodes. If that's the case this command would show corrupted names.

What is your GRUB version? Sounds like one of the JFS bugs I've already fixed in trunk.
