I've just retested and 1-disk raids work without problem. I think what happens in report is that some structures weren't flushed by mdraid.

In my case the command list works as i described, even without the grub2-install after removing the disk. I don't understand why it's logical that the grow -n 2 and fails if executed right after the grow -n 1 -f command. It's an administrative change of the number of disks in the array, in my opnion that can be changed anytime.

This is the command log, i only modified the cat /proc/mdstat output to include only md0 instead of all 7 array's to make the output easier to read.

The message simply means that one disk in RAID is missing. You need to check state of arrays using /proc/mdstat. After mdadm --remove you get degraded array and this message is normal.

Note that your example does not work here. mdadm --grow -n 2 immediately after mdadm --grow -n 1 fails as it should. You first need to add additional (spare) disk and then you can grow array again. But if I reverse --grow and --add I get healthy 2-disks array and no warning.

Please

- do whatever steps you did to reproduce it
- record output of "cat /proc/mdstat"
- run grub2-probe -t abstraction -d /dev/md0

If you get warning, show /proc/mdstat recorded above.

I attached the log file (compressed to fit within the size limit).

Steps to reproduce:
Start with /dev/md0 containing 2 devices, in my case sda1 and sdb1
Remove sdb1:
- mdadm /dev/md0 --fail /dev/sdb1
- mdadm /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdb1
Set md0 to 1 disk: mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -n 1 -f
Run grub2-install /dev/sda (don't know if this step is required)
Set md0 to 2 disks again: mdadm --grow /dev/md0 -n 2
Add sdb1: mdadm /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdb1
Wait for sync to complete
Run grub2-install /dev/sda

Could you attach output of

grub2-install --debug /dev/sda

I just tried and with the trunk version it works ok.

However, after i did the test i restored the original situation with /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 in raid1 on /dev/md0. After this i did a grub2-install /dev/sda, just to be sure. This was the output:

# grub2-install /dev/sda
/usr/sbin/grub2-probe: warning: Couldn't find physical volume `(null)'. Some modules may be missing from core image..
/usr/sbin/grub2-probe: warning: Couldn't find physical volume `(null)'. Some modules may be missing from core image..
Installation finished. No error reported.

Booting after that was fine, and after the reboot the same command did not give the warning messages anymore.

Yes, I understand it. As I said I used your command line to create array.

I'll try to test somewhere during the weekend, but just as a quick comment:
I didn't mean a degraded array (a two disk array with one missing disk), that also worked fine for me. The problem is an array that is configured to consist of a single disk, with -n 1 in the mdadm create command (this also requires -f to force mdadm to create a one-disk array).

I cannot reproduce it on openSUSE 13.1 M3 using mostly up-to-date trunk. I created degraded array md127 with single member /dev/sdc1 using your command, formatted as ext2 and installed grub2 on /dev/sdc using (mounted) md127 as --boot-directory. It installed without issues.

Could you retest with current trunk?

Forgot to mention: Grub release 2.00 (i could only choose some 1.x releases in the menu)

Fri 19 Jul 2013 03:37:28 PM UTC, original submission:

Hi All,

I was installing a new system where i intended to use software raid-1 in the Linux kernel, but during installation only one disk was available. I created the "array"'s voor / and /boot with one disk only. For software raid itself is was a legal (but i admit strange) configuration. When installing grub2 on my distrution (gentoo) it didn't work and gave some backtraces.

First i tried making /boot "redundant" by creating a second raid partition on the same drive, this still gave the same result. Only after making both redundant things worked as intended and grub2 was installed without problems.

Some details:
My partitioning:
Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0xf96d7342

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 2048 264191 131072 fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/sda2 264192 8652799 4194304 fd Linux raid autodetect

Disk /dev/sdb: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0009e87d

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 62 5128391 2564165 b W95 FAT32
Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary.
/dev/sdb2 5128392 15430559 5151084 83 Linux

Here sda is the drive i'm isntalling on, sdb contained a rescue installation which i booted to do the install at sda.

When running grub2-install /dev/sda, the result was this:
pc12 grub2 # grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda
/dev/md0 does not have any corresponding BIOS drive.
pc12 / # grub2-install /dev/sda

If i removed mdadm from the installation the backtraces disapear, but grub2-install was still not succesful (which i guess is normal when using software raid).

My 1-disk "array"'s look like this:
Personalities : [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md1 : active raid1 sda2[0]
4194240 blocks [1/1] [U]

md0 : active raid1 sda1[0]
131008 blocks [1/1] [U]

unused devices: <none>

To create one use:
mdadm --create -l 1 -n 1 -f --metadata=0.90 <md device> <partition device>

Please let me know if you need any more information.

Best regards,
Wesley
