I can no longer reproduce this. So perhaps it has been fixed.

1. Open a Dataset
2. Click on Window|Split
3. Click on a column header button, to select an entire column.
4. Switch to the Variable View using the GtkNotebook Tab
5. Switch to the Data View using the GtkNotebook Tab.
6. Repeat 4 & 5 in rapid succession ~ 4 times.
7. After about the 4th attempt, the message "CRITICAL **: pspp_sheet_view_focus_column: assertion `focus_column->button != NULL' failed" appears.

This seems the be non-deterministic (timing dependent?) but happens quite reliably (at least for me).
