Works for me with symbolic package version 1.1.0 and Octave 3.8.0. Do you still get this error with symbolic version 1.1.0? Which version of the Debian octave-symbolic package did you have installed when you see this error?

The octave-forge symbolic package function sym2poly does not produce correct results when invoked as per its help documentation. The package was installed on debian wheezy using apt-get. Transcript:
