Can you try this simple patch ? It works for me.

If configure is not given an explicit path to freetype and none is available from pkg-config (e.g. because we are cross-compiling), it attempts to auto detect the presence of freetype by compiling a program that contains the line:

#include <freetype2/freetype/freetype.h>

Unfortunately, this test always fails, as this header file expands to a #error line if it is included before <ft2build.h>.
