I submitted stage dimension as a separate issue now (see bug #38625).

After recompiling SoundManager2 with SWF dimension set to 240x240 px,
the text was displayed and another issue surfaced:

It seems that Gnash was somehow, didn't implement
'sandboxType' property in 'System.security' class.

I'll retry in 0.8.11-git as soon as I got it work on my Debian Lenny box,
and I'll file another report if it's not fixed.

Gnash: gnash 0.8.10-1~lenny and browser-plugin-gnash 0.8.10-1~lenny from getgnash.org
Browser: Browser: Debian IceWeasel 3.0.6-3 with no addons
System: Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 Lenny i386

The issue that SoundManager2's SWF shown only "S" character is that Gnash initially set Stage.width and Stage.height to SWF's metadata (which is 16x16 px) regardless what <embed> tag say, and SoundManager2 used that as a dimension of TextField.

Thus only the first character was shown.

I'll submit a separate report about this after I have a chance to check if it's not fixed in current 0.8.11-git.

At least one issue here was about ExternalInterface (in JavaScript -> Flash direction).
I submitted it separately as bug #37223

From now on, I'll try testing from SoundManager2 source code itself to see what caused TextField's display problem.

Also note that SoundManager2 2.97A 20101010 Flash 8 seems written to be compiled with MTASC compiler.
(as it's build script [make-flash8.bat] used a MTASC command, and SoundManager2.as used function main() as an entry point)

With proprietary player (11.2.r202), "Flash output" says:

SM2 SWF V2.97a.20120624 (AS2/Flash 8)
ExternalInterface available
Adding ExternalInterface callbacks...
Testing Flash -> JS...
Flash -> JS OK
Waiting for JS -> Flash...
JS -> Flash OK

Continued from last post (due wrong markup):

Flash Output

Oddly enough, flash output only displayed a single 'S' character instead of the debug message, and when trying to select it (the 'S' character), it would simply disappear and never came back [until refreshed the page].

Using a command:
$ gnash 'http://www.schillmania.com/projects/soundmanager2/swf/soundmanager2_debug.swf?debug=1'

get almost the same thing, that only 'S' was displayed instead of the debug message, the only difference was when selecting 'S', 'e' will be appeared instead of nothing, but cannot get further than 'e'.

@Gabriele Giacone
From the SoundManager troubleshoot URL (http://www.schillmania.com/projects/soundmanager2/troubleshoot/):

System: Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 "Lenny" i386.
Gnash: gnash 0.8.10-1~lenny and browser-plugin-gnash 0.8.10-1~lenny from getgnash.org APT repository,
Browser: Debian IceWeasel 3.0.6-3 with no addons.

Summary

SoundManager 2 start-up FAIL

soundManager onready() or ontimeout() events are ultimately called when start-up completes.

If you're seeing a failure, refer to the below for troubleshooting details for common causes.

Flash _version 10.1.r999.
Gnash_

OK

Flash SWF ../swf/soundmanager2_debug.swf OK

Flash -> JS (Check flash security or flash blockers) Error

Once the flash component of SM2 has loaded, it tries to make a call to Javascript-land. This is a common point of failure, for security reasons:

  • Have a flash blocker? Check that the SM2 flash movie (below) is loading and is not being blocked.
  • Is your browser URL at file:// or c:/path/ or otherwise not using HTTP? Flash security "whitelisting" is required to allow Flash + JS to work when offline, placing it in the "LocalTrusted" Flash security sandbox rather than "localWithFile". Offline viewing: Adding a "trusted location" to the Flash Security Settings Panel. The Flash Player Global Security Settings Panel is a web-based control panel which allows you to configure Flash security. You will need to add the path of the SoundManager 2 project in order for it to work "offline" (ie., when viewing via file:// or c:/)
  • Flash blockers (FlashBlock, "click to flash" etc.) preventing flash load and start-up - need whitelisting/"allow this domain" to work smoothly. If you suspect blocking is the issue, try the SoundManager 2 Flashblock demo.
  • Online viewing (HTTP/S): Same-domain security rules apply to HTML + Flash content by default (crossdomain.xml/allowDomain() in .AS source required to override.)

See Flash debug output for more security error details.

@Gabriele Giacone
A player URL found in <meta> tag on my SoundCloud test page was

http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F31096120&color=3b5998&auto_play=true&show_artwork=false

It's really a Flash 9, but it's not used at all, at least in this SoundCloud page, even with Flash Player 11.
(I verified with Opera 11.51, Firefox 11 and Chrome browser's debugger, and proxy logs; all on Win32 with Flash 11, that the only SWF loaded was "soundmanager2.swf" [Flash 8])

More information regarding the soundmanager2.swf that SoundCloud used:

Gladly, this player is called "SoundManager 2" (http://www.schillmania.com/projects/soundmanager2/), which is free software, under 3-clause BSD License.

The version they used at http://a1.sndcdn.com/swf/soundmanager2.swf
was 2.97A 20101010 Flash 8 with cross-domain enabled

Source+Binary: http://www.schillmania.com/projects/soundmanager2/download/soundmanagerv297a-20101010.zip

(see "soundmanagerv297a-20101010/swf/soundmanager2_flash_xdomain.zip/soundmanager2_flash_xdomain/soundmanager2.swf" in the archive, it's the same file as one used on SoundCloud)

Seems real player is http://player.soundcloud.com/player.swf which is not even launched (player version check?)

12887:2] 72 UNIMPLEMENTED: This SWF file requires AVM2: there will be no ActionScript interpretation

This is some more information of the issue (haven't tested on Gnash yet):

A single SWF file that got loaded on the SoundCloud player page while playing was http://a1.sndcdn.com/swf/soundmanager2.swf
(My test SoundCloud page was http://soundcloud.com/mattnorrisandthemoon/i-saw-three-ships )

Which, according to GNUWin32's file command output:

soundmanager2.swf; Macromedia Flash data (compressed), version 8

It should be able to play in Gnash, as Flash 8 uses only AVM1.
So this might be a bug in Gnash as the original submission states.

Hi GNASH devs!

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Pandaboard and I'm using the stock 0.8.10 package and mozilla plugin from the Ubuntu repos under Firefox, also from the repo.

After YT an Google Video - pretty much the only site I need Flash for that I like to visit regularly is Soundcloud but nothing happens when you click the play button of a song on Soundcloud.

I have heard Soundcloud will not work under LightSpark because it does not support the AVM virtual machines, so GNASH is my only hope!

Maybe its something that would need to be changed on Soundcloud like reverting to SWF9 (if it uses 10) but thats very unlikely to happen of course.

Thanks for your help!
