In the configure script, lines 6546--57, the location of libbfd.a
and libiberty.a is ascertained and if this is unsuccessful, then
default values are put in.

I would suggest, after much teeth gnashing, that the configure script halt at this point and emit the message that the user should run the script again with

--enable-locbfd
