@Ich selber: Please stay friendly in the Octave community.  Rik is not joking and gave you a practical guidelines for free in both bug reports and not a single "thanks" from your side 🤔  If you have trouble following Rik's suggestions, ask for further advise.

Fact is: Octave does not support webP, neither Maltab is interest in this format so far.  Thus it is a super low priority project.  I think there are many more interesting formats out there with overwhelming performance, neither supported by Octave or Matlab.

Please read

https://www.gnu.org/software/octave/support-expectations.html

and consider commercial support if you want to get this format into Octave

Hi Rik, are you joking? You know the bug #58704, that's the reason why PNG could not be used.

Yes, it is a format that is introduced by google and it is the successor of JPG and PNG. It supports a very good compression for loosless and loosfull compressen. Every browser support this format and it is used more and more often.

Really try to compress the same diagram in PNG and in WEBP. It is really great.

For reference, Matlab does not support webP so this would be an Octave-only extension.  For the time being, a path forward would be to export to an supported image format (such as png) and then use a converter from that format to webp.  There are even free online converters (one example, https://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-webp).

Also, this seems to be a Google-promoted format.  There's nothing wrong with that, but it is just one company's particular idea of what they would like to see.

The Format is more tha 10 years old and exists also in a lossless variant which is in many cases better than the old png format.
