Ahh, good news at last.  Marking as fixed and closing report.

Success! It now works and the image does not disappear any more. Thanks Rik and Pantxo!

@Guillaume: Another request, can you try with the development branch and this changeset

changeset 26728:f034b29320ad tip @

Use OpenGl textures to render image objects (bug #55632).

This is Pantxo's work which I checked in this morning.  It completely re-does the way OpenGL renders images and therefore might fix this issue.

I tried again with the latest dev but the issue is still here.

@Guillaume: Can you check whether thing have improved since this changeset:

changeset 26715:24e11ee4fe45

Improve calculation of zlim and aspect ratios for 2d objects (bug #55634).

* graphics.in.h (line::properties): Always include zlim of line in axes zlim
  calculation.
* graphics.cc (check_limit_vals): Use default limits for objects without extent.

This is only 37 hours old, but I think it could be related.  In bug #55634 I found it quite easy to make plots disappear with certain pbaspect combinations.

Thanks for confirming. I could also reproduce it from within a Linux VM where there was no HW-accelerated OpenGL. It only occurs for some very specific ratios (and YDir normal seems to matter too).

You're right, on Windows, with some careful vertical resizing I managed to get an empty figure (the axes are drawn nevertheless).
See attached pic.

If that is the case then Guillaume will need to try installing something like the Nouveau drivers for NVIDIA hardware, switch to that, and see if it makes a difference.

Given that other platforms aren't seeing it, I suspect that will fix it.

I think LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE only works with the Mesa libraries (or ones derived from Mesa) and the Nvidia OpenGL library is not.

Try setting the environment variable

LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1

before starting Octave.  That should use SW rendering over Nvidia HW drivers.

Thanks for the feedbacks. I indeed use NVIDIA drivers on Linux - is there a way to easily test without?

I tried on WIndows and couldn't reproduce the bug at first either. But you will notice that resizing the window horizontally is rather smooth, while vertically is quite jiggly (I think mainly due to the redrawing of the 'coordinates' lower bar of the figure) and if you try long enough you will at some point observe the same issue that the image is empty. When that's the case, calling drawnow or refresh has no effect.

Works or me on Windows 7 as well.
There are some delays during redrawing but in the end (after 0.2 sec or so) the figure looks good.

This works for me.  I'm running Kubuntu 18.04 and using this tip

parent: 26677:33f79d94f21f
 Create any BIST temporary files in writable temporary directory (bug #55565).

This could also have to do with your video card if you are using HW-accelerated OpenGL.

The fact that resizing the figure causes the image to re-appear suggests something hard to debug, but relatively simple.  Somewhere a call to drawnow() or refresh() is effectively not getting made.

When I run the following:

figure;
ax = axes ('Position', [0 0 0.5 0.3]);
imagesc (rand (32), 'Parent', ax);
set (ax, 'YDir', 'normal');

the image disappears and the content of the axis is empty when 'Ydir' is set to 'normal'. Resizing the figure in the vertical axis can make it reappear (this might also be something you have to do to observe the problem in the first instance with a different screen configuration). The fact that it comes and goes seems to indicate there might be a rounding error somewhere.
