  I did not need to.

  I blamed the wrong file.

When I saw the warning about "can't break line" from "groff",
I checked the output.
Saw the long tag and what prevailed was a memory,
that when the tag is long,
the next text goes into the next line (with a normal indent),
which was not the case here.
So I blamed the macro, which was wrong.

The culprit is the long indent.

I have made a new report, which fixes the indention.
The bug report is nr. 53715 and should be mentioned when this wrong report
is closed.

Bjarni,

I can't reproduce this on git HEAD.  Bertrand changed @MACRODIR@ and similar autoconf variables to use SHORT_VERSION instead of AC_PACKAGE_VERSION.  On my system, that seems to help with the absurdly long paragraph tags when an installed groff filespec is the tag.

Can you still reproduce this?

What exactly is wrong here?
What exactly do you suggest the groff should print?

Groff and mandoc produce identical output, and it looks completely correct to me.

Sure, the word "initialization" exceeds the right margin.
But that can't be helped with such an insanely wide indentation: garbage in, garbage out!
Exceeding the right margin is normal groff behaviour when the line cannot be broken.

Is any project member willing to provide an "OK" to close this ticket as invalid?

an-old.tmac: .TP causes wrong formatting with a long tag

Found originally in man page "pic2graph".

  Example:

.TH testman 1 "2018-MM-DD"
.SH NAME
testman \- test a macro
.pl 30
.SH ENVIRONMENT
.\" --------------------------------------------------------------------
.
.nr length \w'\fB/usr/local/share/groff/1.22.3.real.441-d6ec5-dirty/tmac/eqnrc'u+2n
.TP \n[length]u
.B /usr/local/share/groff/1.22.3.real.441-d6ec5-dirty/tmac/eqnrc
The
.BR eqn (1)
initialization file.

  Output is:

testman(1)                  General Commands Manual                 testman(1)

NAME
       testman - test a macro

ENVIRONMENT
       /usr/local/share/groff/1.22.3.real.441-d6ec5-dirty/tmac/eqnrc  The
                                                                      eqn(1)
                                                                      initialization
                                                                      file.

                                  2018-MM-DD                        testman(1)

  Standard error:

troff: <standard input>:13: warning [p 1, 1.7i]: can't break line
