The first release candidate has been available at ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/octave/ for about 3 days. It uses the old .ts files.

I couldn't find where "Escape" cam from, so I just didn't actually translate it (Dutch computer lingo = half English anyway)

The attached changeset fixes a typo in Alexander's. I also changed "Alternativer Hintergrund" to "Abwechselnder Hintergrund" to make it more related to "Zeilen abwechselnd einfärben".

It should be applied instead of Alexander's patch.

While checking the new strings, I found that one in documentation.cc:

    QShortcut *hide_shortcut = new QShortcut (QKeySequence (tr ("Escape")), p);

Would it be better to not use a translatable string to identify the character and instead use the key identifier directly:

    QShortcut *hide_shortcut = new QShortcut (QKeySequence (Qt::Key_Escape), p);

That would avoid that translators could accidentally mess up the shortcut.

I have updated the translation files with changeset
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/75ee2de069ee

Most of the files now have 11 new (not translated) strings.
I do not see a big problem if they are not translated until 4.4 release. However, if they were, so much the better.

Sun 15 Apr 2018 01:13:08 AM UTC, comment #73:

@Philip: You're right. It appears that those strings were never marked for translation.

  QStringList
  variable_editor::color_names (void)
  {
    QStringList output;

    output << "Foreground";
    output << "Background";
    output << "Selected Foreground";
    output << "Selected Background";
    output << "Alternate Background";

    return output;
  }

I marked them for translation in this cset: http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/65f201566857

I don't know how bothered people will be about the missing translations. Torsten could re-generate the .ts files and the translators could go through another round of edits to add these 5 strings. Or we could just wait 8 months until the 5.0 release.

Does anyone have a strong opinion?

I just noted in 4.3.90 that in Preferences pne | vaiable Editor there's no translation for the Variable Editor colors; see attached pic.
My editor couldn't find "Alternate Background" in the nl_NL.ts file (from default branch but does that matter?).

I revised the Catalan translation and the new version (attached) should be much much better in terms of coherence, fixed typos and much better in-context translations.

I know this fixes are deadline but couldn't fully test my translation until Today because the flatpak version including these new translations was not available until Yesterday (I tried compiling Octave myself but got some errors and gave it up).

It would be very appreciated if you could make an exception and add it to Octave 4.4.

Thanks

Thanks Rik.

Just a minor issue: I believe the ellipsis (...) should be retained at the end of these sentences:

Export shortcuts into file...
Import shortcuts from file...

They serve to indicate the user will be asked about the filename.

The original suggestion was just to remove a spurious blank space before the ellipsis.

Thanks and congrats for release 4.4.

I changed a few of the GUI strings to make their purpose clearer as suggested by Felipe (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/3aed4f0ba3cd). The change was made on the development branch. Translation for the 4.4 release is now closed.

Marking this issue report as fixed and closing.

Second, the updated language file contains 6 new or modified strings. It would be great if you find the time to translate them.

Q:
In those *.ts files, in the translation nodes, e.g.:

<translation type="unfinished">Open</translation>
:

I see the attribute
type="unfinished"

Shouldn't these attributes be removed? That is, I guess these attributes indicate a translation is required or still incomplete.
I'll await an answer before uploading the Dutch translation; I've completed it and is /without/ those tags.

I do upload the org.octave.Octave.appdata.xml and org.octave.Octave.desktop.in files (complete, no patch, the translations there are just one-liners)

@Rik, I'm attaching a diff file (not really a changeset) in which I did what I described in

https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?53526#comment12

It did require a bit of code change. This is only for testing whether the translation issue is solved for those two particular objects.

I can't see any affect from changing "Default column width" or "Default row height" on the appearance of the Variable Editor tables (before or after patch), so I'm not sure the attached changes are exactly what should be done. When I select "Apply" or "OK" in the Preferences... window the Variable Editor table does go through some visual adjustment, but the row/column sizing remains roughly the same.

Dan Sebald <sebald>
Fri 30 Mar 2018 08:51:50 PM UTC, comment #18:

Oh, I get what you mean. That "20" happens to be placed in the box in QtCreator as an example string and the translator utility thinks that is something it has to translate. One approach would be to go to the QtCreator property settings, select the "text" field and delete the "20".

However you are detecting that translation is being done on the varedit_columnWidth object, can you see any similar thing going on for the QSpinBoxes? Say, editor_notebook_tab_width_min? If not, then a QSpinBox should do. One should be able to select a value of 20 somehow in the QSpinBox's properties menu.

@Markus: At some points the strings need to be corrected, so why not now? I pushed your two modifications here http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/27ade14df345.

You're right that it would be ideal to now re-generate the .ts files and have translators work on these new files. But, the changes haven't been much and I'm anxious to speed forward to a release. I think we just fix them at the next bug fix release.

Rik <rik5>
Group administrator
Fri 30 Mar 2018 08:37:43 PM UTC, comment #15:

@Dan: The reason the string is translated is because it is the default text shown when the widget is created. One could have something like "Type text in this widget" which would appear in slightly translucent gray. That phrase would need to be in the user's language.

I think you're right, a spinbox could work for this instance. However, I'm not a GUI person so I really don't know.

@Markus

I changed a "chose" to "choose" in the patch.

I used the formal pronoun, since many other open source projects I know (LibreOffice, Thunderbird, VLC) do so and I think it sounds more professional if Octave is used in an Enterprise.

Alexander Wilms <alexanderw>
Fri 30 Mar 2018 08:16:57 PM UTC, comment #13:

More generally, why is translation attempted on the input? If I started typing in one language and it showed up on screen as Spangalese I'd be rather confused.

Dan Sebald <sebald>
Fri 30 Mar 2018 08:09:07 PM UTC, comment #12:

One could replace the <widget class="QLineEdit" name="varedit_columnWidth"> with a QSpinBox. There is an example of a QSpinBox on the "Editor" tab; it's called editor_notebook_tab_width_min. I don't think any changes are needed for any other code because the result of that spin box might be a text string, which if passed through any code that currently checks if the varedit_columnWidth is a valid number will pass.

Install QtCreator and then run "qtcreator settings-dialog.ui &" at the command line. Click on the proper "Variable Editor" tab, select the varedit_columnWidth object and delete it. Pick a QSpinBox from the left-side tools menu and drop it in place of the deleted object, change the width/height to suit, rename the object varedit_columnWidth in the yellow-ish property window on the right. Save. Do the same for any others that you think should be numbers instead of general text. If I recall correctly, spin boxes will also allow general text entry at the keyboard, but they will attempt to ensure the text is always a number.

The attached patch makes some more minor changes to those strings. I don't know whether it is worth applying...

How should we proceed? Should we re-create the .ts files with the updated strings? Or first wait for the translations to come in and change the files afterwards?

I merged Alexander's .ts file with mine. See the other attachment.
@Alexander: Thanks for your help. You are very welcome to review and change the merged version.
I have seen that you changed all strings to use the "Sie" form where applicable. CC'ing Andreas who managed the German translation when 4.2 was released. If I remember correctly, he voted for "Duzen". I have no strong opinion on that. What was your reasoning?

Maybe we should ask the mailing list what they use for e.g. French and Spanish. Although customs are definitely different depending on where you live...

In other tabs "QSpinBox" seems to be used for similar settings. But maybe someone who knows what they are doing should change that.

I screwed up the commit (no commit message, no summary) but the changes Markus identified have been done (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/32a7222d637a).

Someone who understands .ui files needs to debug why the numbers "20" and "2" are translatabale.

If you look at the file settings-dialog.ui at line 2713 you find

                <widget class="QLineEdit" name="varedit_columnWidth">
                 <property name="text">
                  <string>20</string>
                 </property>
                </widget>

So the UI definition file is calling for a QLineEdit widget and setting the the text field to 20. Maybe there is some other widget that just accepts numbers?

Thanks Rik.
Those are the text fields in the "Variable Editor" tab that are labelled "Default column width" and "Default row height" respectively.

@Markus: I fixed most of the things you found in comment #5. Can you give me the file and line numbers for the settings dialog "20" and "2" instances?

Some other minor things:
The capitalization of "convert line endings to &windows (crlf)" doesn't match the other similar strings.
Why is the string "&%1 %2" in octave::file_editor translatable?
Some strings in octave::file_editor_tab use the word "codec" where I think that "encoding" should be used.
Why is the string "./%1.txt" in octave::variable_editor_stack translatable?
Why are the numbers "20" and "2" in the settings dialog translatable?

I couldn't find a way to export it as .tm only .qm, so I've uploaded the .ts

The status tip "Another paste clipboard into variable data" for pasting a table in variable-editor.cc seems not that fitting.

Correct. I changed "curent" to "current" in this cset (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/6c1611e6830f).

I noticed a typo in the Editor pane of the settings window:

"Wrap long lines at curent window border"
